For my cruise down the Chesapeake this June I've decided on a Sound of Music theme.

‎I'll be renaming my boat "Edelweiss" for the trip. Interested applicants should be able to ‎read a nautical chart and:‎
• know all the songs from the movie‎
• have confidence in sunshine
• have confidence in rain
• not mind calling me "Captain"‎
• not mind being called, alternately, "Maria", "the Countess" , "Franz", "Liesl", ‎‎"Louisa", "Friedrich", "Kurt", "Brigitta", "Marta" or "Gretl".‎

Preference will be given to applicants who can speak Austrian, play the guitar and sew ‎clothing from drapery material.‎

Food will consist of typical Austrian fare: cheese fondue, beer, hot dogs, apple strudel, ‎schnitzel with noodles (my favorite), Swiss chocolate, SwissMiss cocao, schnapps, etc.‎

Interviews will begin as soon as the weather warms up this spring. Please come dressed ‎as your favorite character. No weirdos, please.‎

I've attended Sound of Music sing-a-longs (the drunk guys in the back dressed as the Swiss Alps were a riot), have traveled to Austria where it was filmed (they could not possibly have hidden behind the grave stones the way they are really positioned), AND have the DVD and watched the version with commentary.

Does that qualify me to be second in command on Edelweiss?

:)

I first watched The Sound of Music as a young boy, with my family. I have seen it many times since; it is one of my favorite films and feels like a beloved part of my childhood.

That's why, as a young single man with several drinks in me, I swear I meant it as a compliment when I told a girl in a bar that her dress reminded me of "the ones Maria made out of curtains." Her face fell abruptly and she walked away, while my friends laughed and teased me for days. I don't think any of them had seen the movie.

When I was young I got to meet the real Maria at the place they ran in Vermont or New Hampshire. Does that count. I also have the original cast recording on 12 inch.

That's a start, but does your heart want to sing every song it hears? Plus, the actual tryouts will have to wait until my boat is no longer icebound. In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if applicants could send me a picture of themselves locating the Chesapeake Bay on a nautical chart.

That drunken Maria comment puts you automatically on the short list.

Yes, that counts. I'll have to see if I can find a gimballed record player, though.

My Uncle Herb bought a ski lodge in Killington, Vermont that the Von Trapp family was said to have owned. Ooh, that reminds me, we'll have to add Uncle Herb's famous Anglo-Franco muffins to the menu (French toast made with an English muffin).

Ha, Back some years ago,Julie"s partner decided on a tropical theme birthday party for her to be held up in the Lund area. Huge money spent on barges of stuff brought up from the south, leaving the locals feeling neglected and left out of the cash flow. Big chartered yacht surrounded by most of the lesser mortals of paradise (hippy back woods types). All in semi unison renditions of the 'sounds of' Heard later that Julie was not amused. As an encore, we later did 'donka shaa' for another celeb but never heard from any talent scouts. In spite of that disappointment ,life was good.

How about this connection...
The former choir teacher at the school I work at, her maiden name is Trapp and her grandfather was the captain's second cousin. And in her younger years, she used to do a lot of local theatre and performed as the Mother Superior in the play. Over the years, she has met some of the Von Trapp grandchildren as well as Maria, not the mother, but the child of the Captain and Maria.
as a kid, I saw the movie when it played at the Willow Lawn theatre here in Richmond. It had a continous run there of over 2 years. definitely a record that will never be broken.
