Hi,

I'm looking for a boat that can raced as well as used for cruising with my wife. The length should be in the mid thirties and the price around $50,000. Any opinions are appreciated.

Any of the mid 30' beneteau first series boats from the mid to early 90s would fit this bill. Jeanneau has a sunshine 36/38 that is a tony castro design that has done well too. It is 36 without a true sugar scoop, 38 with. There is also a regatta version where the sugar scoop was filled in per say from the factory.

C&C also have many boats from the mid 80s that work well too.

I recently noted a Catalina that took a nelsom marek design and made it cruisy. IIRC it was 40' or so.

Thanks Barquito,

No real draft concerns. It would be moored in the inter coastal less than a mile from the inlet to the ocean. I have an old sailboat now (1974 O'Day) and although I really enjoy it I think I'd prefer as new as I can afford.

How much racing vs how much cruising? In this size and price range there are a huge number of boats that have been called racer/cruisers. Heck my uncles Tripp 40 was called a R/C but anyone who cruised it must have been on drugs. A big J boat like the 35 or 40, some of the newer non-carbon ones as well, the 105 might fit... To many options honestly.

a quick tip is narrow the decade of year built you want...it helps narrow down design parameters, 70s,80s, 90s 2000s etc...

what kind of racing, and what kind of cruising?
60s? you could say a cal40
70s any pseudo ior boat, I36, yankee38, cals, pearsons, ericsons etc
80s and 90s and 2000s a benetau or something?

countless boats out there that fit this "criteria"

for 50k I would look at catalinas, benetaus, kitted I36's or ericson 37s and similar that will get you you max out of your budget

good luck

What kind of racing? Low key club racing or something more serious? If the first, your choices are much wider than the second. That said with your size and price constraints, you are probably looking at a mid-80s to maybe early 90s boat. Certainly boats like a Beneteau First, J, or C&C would be good place to start.

Hey,

As mentioned, your request is very general. I would suggest picking a PHRF number to narrow it down a little.

Catalina considered the Catalina 36 to be racer / cruiser (with a PHRF of over 150 for most models) and Beneteau considers a 36.7 a racer / cruiser (with a PHRF of 80 or so).

Knowing which direction you are leaning will make it easier to narrow down your choices.

In my mind, the best PHRF racers are boats which are good across a broad range of conditions but slightly optimized for the prevailing conditions in your region. I also lean towards designs which have been successfully raced one design since the sail lofts will have been through a sail development process for the class and so can provide tuning and trim recommendations.

Boats that I like in that size range are the J-35, Farr 1020, Express 37, Schock 35, and the like.

Other slightly less competitive oriented boats might include the J-36, Farr 11.6, Tripp 37, Frers 36, J-37c.

I would avoid old IOR race boats and boats that are down wind oriented sleds since they tend be harder to race consistently.
