Cushions & Fabric?

The prices being quoted seem high to me just based on our one experience. We had our entire interior of our catamaran reupholstered in summer 2013 by JSI for $2,700. This was in Brisa Ultraleather and the cushions are complicated multi-part, mult-shape with leg bolsters and scalloped backs, etc.

This was for only the fabric part. New foam was quoted at an additional $250, which we would have done except we needed to ship the upholstery out of country.

In our case, the foam was a bit under 10% of the price and didn't seem that expensive in comparison. Especially since it had to be cut, shaped and in some cases laminated. It is very high quality foam - the stuff we have now is 18yrs old and is still firm and nice.

We're talking about making a box out of fabric.
Maybe. Our cushions, for example, are not boxes. They are not only irregular in shape, they aren't even cubic shapes. Lots of round stuff and bolsters and different densities. Even the foam must be shaped for this. The fabric needs to fit skin tight, or it would be uncomfortable and unsightly.

I do agree that learning sewing skills is valuable, but really nice upholstery can be way above beginner level, and some of it can even challenge professionals.

I get foam at wholesale, and the above who got quoted $250 must have been for only a few cushions.
9 cushions, total foam size altogether ~14'x4', some of it shaped into roundy sections (backrests) and some of it laminated with different densities (seats).

I just double-checked the quote since I was going by memory and that was the price.

The quote was from summer of 2013 from JSI in Florida. Somebody posted that they have a new name now. Yes, it is high density foam and good quality.

The market and pricing may have changed in the past couple of years, or the quoted cost may have been wrapped up in the overall cost and not broken out correctly (ie, overcharged for the upholstery material and labor and undercharged for the foam). I would have no way of judging that.
