Last spring as I was about to launch I checked for play in the cutlass bearing. There was about .006/.010 play ( checked with a feeler gage, just can't remember exactly what it was) I decide to launch and deal with it in the fall.
I noticed no vibration when motoring, I motored about 25/30 hrs. this season.
The boat was hauled today, after it was set into the cradle I checked the shaft and there was no play. I turned the shaft to different positions, still no play.
I am at a loss. Does the rubber inside the bearing shrink and swell while in and out of the water? What am I missing??

It does swell, even the plastic (Thordon) swells a bit.
Your problem got fixed by itself. :)
Measure again in the spring, and it will be back to the dry "play".
