Zanshin,
The Narrows are easy in good weather and light - but no fun at all in bigger waves; I only went through once in rough weather, after that I always waited for better conditions or went the long way around. Have fun slogging uphill
It didn't happen unless you have a picture I've never seen a whale. This is the right time of year and you are in the right location, though... Isn't Starlink wonderful - we get an up to the minute accurate report from the intrepid explorers as they brave the elements on their quest to reach Antigua.
I'm culling the herd of over 1000 pictures from the past couple of days at the Heineken Regatta in St. Martin and find it hard to know where to start. So here's one of the Volvo Open 70/65 class starting. We had one come to within less than a foot of our stern on this start and even a 24mm lens wasn't wide enough to catch that.
Yes, I was on the RC on Committee Boat "A". Best seat in the house These are taken on the start line, both as fun pictures and proof of OCS, should the need arise
I'm lucky to be on the committee boat at the Heineken Regatta in St. Martin. I'm in a location where it is hard not to get some good pictures! I just finished culling the over 1000 pictures down to a manageable number and have put together a page with the picture grouped by day (and one group showing the volunteers at work). If you want to look at them, just click on the link below to visit the gallery.
Last night at happy hour at Buccaneer's Beach Bar in St. Martin. "Zanshin" is hidden amongst the other wrecks floating around the anchorage, including that 3-master anchored halfway to the USVI.
I didn't look at the weather, and the north swell has just set in here. I have to do home-office, otherwise I would have entered the calm of the lagoon already.
I'm still stuck here in St. Martin, waiting for my genoa to be fixed. I do home office during the day, so this is all I get to see in the evening (Sint Maarten Yacht Club bar)
I'm surprised that they even let this floating wreck into the St. Martin Simpson Bay Lagoon; much less let it leave at 18:30 for a special outbound bridge opening. I hope it is insured! Owner by some guy named Hilfinger.
Last night I went to a local waterfront restaurant here in Sint Maarten called "La Vie en Mer" featuring a blend of classical French and modern Australian cuisine. A mini green flash sunset seen from my table and a plentiful selection of cheeses coupled with cold beer and wine started the meal. Sometime thereafter the main course of ribs was served fresh from the oven, accompanied by a classic German side dish. Yummy indeed! The meal was topped off with a mango flan and more beverages.
@SanderO - I've done both. The good thing about internet and connectivity is that you don't have to use it if you don't want to; unlike back in the day when one didn't have a choice - there was nothing available.
I just saw the same sunrise from several miles away. I've got to agree with @MarkofSeaLife; it is just as crappy here. Terrible winds, temperature, saltwater and cloud cover sucks, too. At least I've not got as many boats blocking the view... (Deep Bay, Antigua & Barbuda)
