I live in Geneva, IL, and own an O''Day Daysailor, which I''ve been trailering to either Lake Delavan in WI, or else to the North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor. Both of those destinations are about a 2 hour drive. I''d like to find someplace a little closer to home to sail. Does anyone know of a lake within roughly an hour of Geneva with public launch facilities that would be a good place for sailing? Thanks.

I also trailer my sailboat from Geneva Il. except I launch out of Waukegan. We will be going out this sunday for a sail toward the air and water show in chicago I have a 25ft Helms hope to see you on the water. My call sign on the radio is la vita sol.

Is there anyplace in the Chain of Lakes area with public launch facilities that would be good for sailing a small boat (16 ft)?

The chain of lakes is dangerous place to sail. These bodies of waters are filled with drunken powerboat operators. You would be safer crawling across the Eisenhower or Kennedy Expressways on your knees in a bed of broken glass surrounded by man eating tigers that haven''t eaten in 6 months.

Yes, one visit to the Chain of Lakes was enough for me, but there appear to be many smaller lakes in that general area. My impression is that in Chicago and northern Illinois, there are many small lakes full of drunken powerboaters, private marinas for people with larger boats, and plenty of places to put a fishing boat in the water, but I''ve had difficulty finding a place to launch a small sailboat within an hour or so of where I live (40 miles west of Chicago). I keep hoping to discover a lake to sail at that doesn''t require a two-hour drive to Wisconsin.
