HI,
I am thinking about buying a 40' ketch in the Jacksonville FL. Area and I am wondering if anybody knows about how I could get it delivered up to Rhode Island. I know their are several options avalible. Unfortunatly I don't think I would be able to get a month or so off from work to bring it up myself.
I am thinking about delivery and having a crew deliver it up but I wouldn't know where to begin.

I am just in the beginning to talk to the broker about this boat and before I got too far along I would like to know about what it will cost to get the boat up here.

any advice is welcome

A delivery crew should be able to get her back in a week or two. Rough estimate would be $10k to $15k. Your broker should be able to help find a reliable crew. RI is loaded with them.

Some will bid by job, some by the day. $300/day for capt and another 100 per additional crew seems typical. Let your broker recommend someone.

Are you wanting the boat to head northeast in December? Makes little sense, wait til spring when the winter northelies let up.

Ground transport for a 40ft boat starts to get pricey, as dimensions begin to require special road permits and escorts. Further, everything must be removed from above the decks and reinstalled. It's hard on a boat, but it is an option.

Be sure to get references from delivery skippers. Not all are alike. There is a bit of "you get what you pay for" in that business too. The skipper I've used is $400 per day, plus crew at varying rates, plus provisions at a fixed rate per day that I can't recall. On per diem deals, you can often negotiate a different rate, if they have to hole up ashore for weather. I pay half rate for weather days and they sit in a local pub and send me pics. :)

There are at least two delivery skippers on SailNet, JonEisberg and SVAUDACIOUS. You might send them a private message and see what they would charge so you can budget for delivery. The other factor is that the cheapest delivery route is offshore rather than the intercostal, but to do either the boat needs to be in good enough condition and properly equipped to make the passage.

Good luck with your purchase.

Jacksonville to Newport should be 7 to 9 days depending on the boat, its condition, and the weather.

Rates run from around $150/day to 600/day and up (mine are $400/day). To some extent you do get what you pay for. Some skippers charge by the mile but the price range works out about the same. You can expect to pay travel expenses and provisions (I budget $15/person/day for food).

You need to read the fine print. Some skippers charge door to door, some for time underway only, and some for somewhere in between.

As an example (not an advertisement), for a boat really ready to go I do not charge for a provisioning day or for weather holds. Weather delays enroute are a judgment call.

Some skippers pay their crew. I have a long list of crew that want offshore time, either for licensure or to sail with me, or someone like me, to learn something.

Jeff - You've been on my boat: SVAuspicious. I may be audacious from time to time but my username is SVAuspicious. Jaime - Off the top of my head, on SailNet JonEisberg, jackdale, and I regularly make deliveries. I have a short list of other skippers I work with sometimes that I will share with you if you wish.

For an upper middle tier skipper all costs included you might budget $4000 - 7000. Jon might give you a different target.

With respect to condition of the boat if it isn't ready to go when I arrive the owner has three choices: pay for me to go home, pay my day rate to manage repairs, pay my hourly rate for me to fix it.

Take that deal!!

By the time I pay to put three paid crew aboard, provision, fuel, airline tickets, parking fees, sometime a hotel room on one end or the other, I've seen double.

Of course, if the boat needs a raft, epirb, etc, not to mention just being in good repair, the budget can really go up.

Agreed on the cost of equipment.

I didn't account for fuel explicitly - I sail, although when the wind is light I look at the cost of fuel compared to the cost of my time and make the best call I can in the interests of the customer.

I've never billed a hotel room to a customer. It's a boat. Sleep on it.

I recall the first time I paid for a delivery and they motored most if it. Motor sailing at least. I was annoyed. However, it would have saved at least a day over the two week delivery, which would have cost at least as much as the fuel. Since then, all deliveries have had significant fuel usage. I only get antsy that they not pound on the iron genny too much.

Yes, sleep aboard. However, sometimes the departure flight is too far away and an airport hotel is reasonable.

I dunno, seems an awful lot would have to go wrong enroute, for it to wind up costing that much... :)

Dave's numbers sound pretty realistic, to me... Pretty straightforward trip, I'd be inclined to do it alone as I prefer to do most of the time with boats that size, just running up the coast, as the weather dictates... A 40' ketch can obviously go up inside behind Hatteras, and the wintertime can actually be a pretty favorable time to make this run, a lot of folks underestimate how common SW-W breezes can be throughout the winter months...

Agreed. A lot depends on the boat. I try to keep the boat moving because that is the best deal for the customer. Sometimes the calculations say "sail" because motoring would required heading in for fuel and losing a day (Gulf Stream to Beaufort NC and back out, for example). Many delivery skippers, like me, will work hard to keep your costs down. Repeat business and referrals are important to us so we want you to be happy.

Sometimes. We've just stood watches moving your boat. We can rent a car one-way and leave from the boat, taking turns driving. It depends on where you are. Sometimes things like ferries get in the way, especially in the Caribbean. On the other hand, friends have put me up more than once.

your advice was helpful and helps me put things in perspective, I am not sure if I will be purchasing this boat. but the deliveriy cost will probably put it out of my reach. I will have to try to use that in the negotaions, or try to get some time out of work. well either way thank you everybody.

fwiw and before I get banned some of the delivery prices expressed here are in the UPPER eschelon of deliveries price wise...for those prices its more practical to deliver by land

this is not a hit on the very proffesional skippers here but it does impact me how expensive some of the prices are.

I know a few skippers and captains doing stuff around the world for pennies compared to this.

I guess its the location and budgets and destinations that command these prices but I gotta say man!

in any case there are many skippers out there and you get what you pay for this is true always....

good luck OP.

I think a very sensible midway solution is to go on the maiden voyage yourself with competent people and sailors and pay for their expenses and food etc...prefferably those that know your boat type and how it sails etc...

but that might take more time if you are short on time because of work etc...

in any case

One more thought for the OP, if they reconsider at a future date. The owner almost always provides insurance for the delivery too. You just call your carrier and have them add a rider for the trip. They typically want to see the skippers license and a brief resume. I've seen everything from a waived cost for a short trip to many hundreds of dollars in premium for longer voyages.
