There's a good chance that we'll end up buying a boat in CT this season. Ideally, I'd like to sail it up to where we'll keep it in Boston Harbor (as opposed to having it transported on a truck). I'm not at a level yet to do this on my own and was wondering if anyone has hired a captain for such services. Any recommendations on where to start looking? I checked in the "Crew Wanted" section, but since I'm looking for a short run and a captain, I'm not sure if that's appropriate.

Well, just ask for help around here. Here are many skippers who would do it just for fun and rum. It is relatively short run, less than 200 miles, I guess?

What kind of boat is it?

I looked at your posts. I'd love to try Cal, I never sailed one and I can squeeze a few days off around weekend. I may not qualify as professional delivery captain, but I'm not asking for money either :)

Contact me, if you are interested.

If you want a skipper, or free crew, you could try Offshore Passage Opportunities (www.sailopo.com). It's the outfit run by Hank Schmitt, a very seasoned and well-regarded skipper in his own right. Hank is based on Long Island's north shore, so he is in your sailing backyard, so to speak. Also, Hank delivered our boat back from Bermuda one year, so I have used him personally.

Note that in the interests of full disclosure, and though I have no affiliation with OPO, I do know Hank reasonably well, and he does have a role in our Bermuda rally.

delivery captain

Hello,

I was in a similar position in 2006. I bought a boat in Newport, RI and needed to get it home to Mt. Sinai, NY (near Port Jeff). Trucking was out due to the cost. I wanted to sail the boat home and my dad volunteered to help. We both decided that hiring a delivery captain would be a good idea.

To make a long story short, we did hire a guy and he was great and really helped.

I found him here:
Spicer's Brokerage Sales (Noank, CT)

The guy I used isn't listed there anymore. If you want his number, let me know and I'll send it to you.

good luck,
Barry

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I gave Hank a call to get a ballpark #, very nice guy. (I mentioned you referred him Dan)

Vlad, thanks for your offer. If a sale goes through in time, I may take you up on it.

I work as an ASA instructor/captain out of Boston and could combine a delivery with training...and for a comparative song. No cover for me, as I have plenty of posts around here (some less diplomatic than others).
