Could be bypass water and engine is nearly full. I'd pull the injectors or open de compress before turning up a hydraulic klunk. Keep raw water off until you solve the bleeding.
It would be useful to become familiar with your equipment before you drift broadside onto the beach. Eg, gas engines have chokes, diesels may have a decompresser .There may be other pertinent facts to learn.
