since 2007 i bought an use a Garmin 3206 for charts and depth. works fine but i thought i'd update and just bought a lowrance elite 7 hdi. a little bigger screen and i'm sure a better fish finder - that's what all the avertiseing is about. i also bought the update chip Nautic insight Pro hi def marine chart.
BUT i'm not happy at all about its charts. it doesn't give the buoy numbers, no names of bridges or their heights. its very busy with depth contours and land maps (of no interest). do others use Lowrance as a chartplotter or have found what i'm seeing? there is a big difference in price. i'm leaning to go back to Garmin.

Hey,

I think you must be doing something wrong. ALL the major manufacturers display the same type of data. I have an older (2006) Lowrance unit with Nautic Insight charts and I could display buoy info, hazard info, lighthouse info, etc. Are you sure the chart has been loaded into the plotter?

Good luck,

I wonder if that info is identified by putting the cursor on the mark and clicking on it? I don't use that program / plotter but I know from switching to Navionics from Garmin's Blue Chart that things were done differently and there is a learning curve. Play around with it and you might grow to like it.

what i've learned since then is to send back the Nautic Pro chip and buy the Navionics chip for the south florida , carribean and all of south america, for about $185. lot of charts for the money . Navionics advertise that its the same setup as paper charts with all the right info. their web site is awesome, the most complete marine charts of the world that you can use with an internet connection of course.

I wonder if perhaps there wasn't some setting as to what to show. Likely stock setting were for a power boater/fishing boat.

I was going to recommend looking into getting a different chip like the Navionics one, but it sounds like you sorted it all out! I've been using Navionics lately too and agree it's a great for the cost - no issues with it so far.
