Well, the Dirty deed's done, but certainly NOT dirt cheap!
The new chain went into the dinghy this morning about 11Am. Could not get the Zodiac to plane with 200" of half inch chain in the bow. Hmmmm.
Pulled the main anchor up and set the #2, a Danforth on chain & line.
Then we dropped the #1 anchor into the dink, followed by 300' of badly rusted and pitted 3/8" (only 14 months old) chain. Off came the 3/8" gypsy and on went the new, stainless steel gypsy, for the larger chain.
Next the new chain came aboard and was pulled down the deck to be marked; at least it's aboard, yippee! After marking, back in the dink it went to be brought immediately back aboard again, but down in the chain locker this time, with the #1 anchor finally shackled on.
Then it was time to pick up the #2 and once that was secure, down went the 88# Rocna followed by the new 1/2" inch chain.
We shall sleep soundly tonight, both from all the hard work AND because a 4 year dream of having the proper size chain for the boat was finally realized today.
Ain't yachting fun?

Indeed it is but would you have it any other way ?

Capt .... did I miss something re your old chain ? 14 months ? WTF ?

Capt. had some "chain mites" It was a good little thread a few weeks/months back.

Actually, it was Acco 3B hot dip from a reliable retailer and is now in the hands of Peerless, for testing. Certainly NOT 3 C chain for us$7.50 a foot.

I'm surprised the dink floated, let alone didn't plane. :)
I'm curious how you got 550lbs of chain from the store to the dink?
I keep extolling the virtues of non-RIB inflatables, but no one wants to hear it.
As for moving the chain from the store to the dink, labor is very cheap down here. I just hired 550 West Indians, and they each carried one link. We wouldn't want to over work them, would we?

Do you have any issues with the loads on the front of your inflatable when it is on the davits? The transom takes the rear loads, but what about the front?

I keep extolling the virtues of non-RIB inflatables, but no one wants to hear it.
As for moving the chain from the store to the dink, labor is very cheap down here. I just hired 550 West Indians, and they each carried one link. We wouldn't want to over work them, would we?

We had lifting eyes professionally glued to the dink for the davits. They came off after about a year, but we glued them back on about 3 years back with epoxy and haven't had any trouble since, knock on wood.
However, we do not sail with the dink on the davits; she comes aboard on the foredeck for any trip under sail. But she does hang on the davits EVERY single night.
We store it fully inflated on the foredeck (except the keel) and with the gas tank and a 2 gallon jerry jug of gas, I figure we have a range of about 55 miles should we need to abandon the boat. That coupled with our life raft, means we will never have to watch a ship pass us by in a survival situation, I believe.

Thanks! I was thinking about a similar solution. I don't have davits, but I prefer to at least lift the dinghy with a halyard at night even if it is hanging a little lower than the deck. I can't get a good night sleep with the dinghy just tied off the stern.

Seriously, how do you get that much chain down the dock and into the dinghy?

Aw shucks, you want me to be serious?
OK. The door of Budget Marine is about 200 feet from the dinghy dock in True Blue/Prickly Bay (Spice Island Marine). Their employee had in a regular dock cart and wheeled it to the dink. I thought the cart would break (wheels went flat and the axle bent pretty badly), but it didn't. Then hand over handed the chain into the dink. It went quite easily.

Amazed that a dock cart didn't crush. I would love to have seen that in our marina. Our yard manager gets all hot and bothered, if we put a couple of 4D batts in a cart. I would pay to see his face with your chain in one.
