Do people steal magma grills?

At long last, I'm getting a Magma grill for my boat, as no Catalina is complete without one. I'm expecting to get at least a knot or two faster speed, better weather, and more female attention by putting the grill off the stern.

In all seriousness though, these things aren't cheap. Do people every steal them? Should I leave it on my boat all the time, or only when I'm using it? Security in my marina is pretty good, but it's not exactly off the beaten path.

We leave ours attached to the rail year 'round for the past six years here in Washington State. I lock up my outboard if I leave it unattended, but not the grill.
People steal anything that's not bolted down.

Then they come back with wrenches for what's been bolted down.

Bolt it on, use a security cable, and if anybody asks, just say 'Sometimes the mounts loosen up and it almost ell overboar, this way we can't lose it.'

Hey, folks have been stealing manhole covers and plumbing for scarp metal. Bicycles. Hubcaps. I'll bet I can get a ast $50 for your grill by stealing it and posting it on CraigsList, and you've got no ID on it to slow me down.

You'll be alright - I have three on mine never had one stolen... but my sunglasses always are missing...
Soulfinger, You should be fine without locking it down,Jody already has three and that ought to be enough to keep him for awhile. You might want to find out how far Hellosailor is docked from you ,though. Seriously , I replaced the handle on the rail mount with a nylon lock nut on mine. That eliminated the temptation by lazy crooks and keeps it from accidently coming off.
I was in a boat yard where someone stole some shaft zincs - go figure.

The last boat yard I was in for ten months, nobody locked anything. To my knowledge, nobody took anything either.

:)

I have a Magma and it is not locked.

Small outboards seem to have a pretty easy market.

My sailing mentor was telling me a few years back, a "crew" came in one night and stole 36 outboard from the marina. Then three weeks later, someone came back and stole 36 brand new outboards. Someone speculated that they may not even have taken the first 36 - they might have just dumped them in the lake and waited for the 36 new ones.

Cheers

So...which marina and slip is yours? :D
Hey, back off, I have his grill staked out use on my boat!
If you bought the entry level round kettle Magma, no one in their right mind would steal it, sucker blows out with any wind over about 8 or 10 knots. POS in my opinion. Hopefully you bought the larger rectangular model. If not return the round one and save up for the better one.

I also am in Texas and on the same lake/bay as you.. Except i am in the ghetto of marina's. They still do not steal them here..lol
There are 20 or thirty boats that have deep layers of dust/ algae on them with Magna's hanging off the side . They may rust off before some one steals one..
:D
I am at the end of Clear lake..

Is your Catalina chained to the dock? It might be easier to steal.

What about your running rigging? Anchor? Sails?
Can you give some more sample question and answers. How great your info is! It really useful for me. Thanks.
I think some of it depends on where you are, but I have found people will steal whatever they can get their frigging hands on, especially if they think they can get away with it.
You can't give them away

Just like Doublelee said. The things are a piece of crap. I have searched and searched for a grill that would not blow out. Finally after many boat bucks I found a grill that will not blow out. It was a 89.00 stainless grill from Lowe's. I bought it 5 years ago and is still working great.

I think people worry way too much about people stealing things - at least in a marina. I'm in the clear lake area near galveston and most of the time my lazarettes are unlocked, my grill certainly isn't locked onto the boat, and for that matter, anyone brave enough could easily steal my jib. When the outboard's on the motor mount on the stern, I lock it if I think about it. When the dink's hanging from the arch, nothing's locked.

I think we're in a fairly secure marina, and my insurance is paid up.

I worry about a number of things more than whether someone might climb on my boat and steal something...

But that's just me...
Well put Lagniappe. I probably do have better things to worry about. BTW, I've seen you out on the bay. Nice to see someone around here that I recognize.
Give me a shout on the radio the next time you see me. We'll do the same...

We have so many live aboards at my marina, that keep an eye on everyone's boat. If someone stepped on my boat and started to take something, they'd end up with an anchor around their feet 10 feet down. My thought is, if you know the people around you, and they live aboard, they will watch out for you. A bottle of rum or a case of beer every now and then, helps too.
