Double enders are dear to my heart, and hopefully one day near as well. Most of my favorite boats (Baba 30, Hans Christian 33t, Westsail 32, Pacific Seacraft Crealock 37, etc.) feature this design trait. So it was in that vein that I asked Bob Perry (Thanks Bob!) to provide his thoughts on double enders for my website. Interesting, thanks for the link. My own boat has a broad transom but is pointed at the waterline aft. She leaves a very clean wake.

Great read, thanks Bob. I too "just like them." I agree, there is nothing particularly seaworthy about a double-ender, and indeed the design introduces certain compromises (aft space being one), but all designs are a compromise.

A sailboat is more than just a cheap way to go from A to B. Your boat must tug at your heartstrings. Your boat must be a thing of beauty (at least in your eyes). Double-enders are beautiful to me.

I like em!

I've had two of them so far. Both Chuck Paine designs. My Frances 26 I had for 26 years. In fact the article Bob wrote in "Yachting" so many years ago had a picture of her "Soleil". Dark blue/tanbark sails. I still miss her.

I currently have a Leigh 30 (canoe stern) Sails like a dream and pretty.

There is a bit of a hit on aft space, but they are undeniably pretty.
You will have a long keel (or very nearly so) and they often very stable.
My own is a classy Union Polaris 36, from 1977.
There was some Bob Perry influence there but it was not one of his designs, per se.
Very few ships are as pretty as that one, in my opinion, at least.
I would never sell that lady, and I had many chances to.

What is it about canoe-stern'd boats that they always seem to have faux planking on fiberglass hulls?
Not that there is anything wrong with that, in addition to the funky trunk, which makes it hard to install junk, like ladders and davits, when you want to go for a dunk.

Sounds like the general consensus is that choosing a double ender is choosing form over function, in most cases.

There are some quite nice 'quirks' of advantage in the classic canoe stern: You cant overload the lazarette with an immense amount of heavy and needless junk ... thus keeping the stern 'light'; you can heel the boat over almost onto it beam ends and have hardly any development of adverse helm due to the typical symmetric hull form. ;-)

These boats are 'well mannered & easy pleasure' to sail.

Plank lines:
Plank lines are a West Coast thang. When I worked at Carter's office Chuck Paine could not belive I'd design planking lines into the hull mold. "A true yacht does not show it's plank lines." Well, where I came from we had a rich heritage of workboats whose lines were enhanced by the harmnonious sweep of the planking lines and many of my earkly boats took advantage of that. They make mold maintainence a nightmare.

I do like the plank lines. But it's ironic that we wood boat owners take pride in smooth hulls, while classic styled glass boats show off the imaginary planks.
