Hi all,

I'm relatively new to sailing ... been out a bunch of times on small, rented boats but this season, I'm dry mooring a Sunfish at a nearby lake. Can anyone share their advice on securing the boat, mast, boom, etc.? This is the first time I will be doing this. I'm really looking forward to being able to sail any day of the week and not be dependent on the boat rental place being open.

When we leave our sunfish in the water, we use an ordinary padlock and chain because a determined criminal will get through any lock. The lock is to keep kids and idiots from taking the hull for a joyride.

We do take the rudder, rig and centerboard home. Its a pain but it renders the boat useless and so its not a target for theft. If we are just leaving the boat overnight sometimes we leave the mast and sail on the boat, tied up with the sail cover on. This approach has worked for many years.

I agree with Sal. Make it impossible to sail, and secure the trailer. O/w there won't be too many looking to steal it. If you think about it, all of the mega boats in the slips at the yacht clubs could be broken into and hot-wired. I haven't heard of too many sailboats being stolen.
