I've been looking at boats from the late 70's. A few (Tartan, Cape Dory) have a one cylinder Farymann Diesel engine. I'm pretty sure the two I've seen are model A30M (vertical). I found an owner's manual with basic maintenance procedures on capedory.org but it doesn't list part numbers. Is a more technical manual available with part numbers? I would love to hear from current or past Farymann owners on their experience with these engines, and availability of parts. How does Farymann compare to Volvo in the 76-79 vintage?
Thanks,
Chuck

farymann repair manual

I just bought a Fisher Panda generator that uses a farymann 18w engine, I would like to find a repair manual for that engine or the farymann 15, basically the same thing, I think. A digital version (pdf, or other) would be ideal, it doesn't get mouldy and wet and takes up much less room, but paper would answer the questions I have right now. Thanks

Find out what the make of the pump is. A good marine store should be able to help. Farymann does not make water pumps. It is either a Jabsco, Johnson, Sherwood, or Oberdorfer. I would guess Jabsco. Do you have the old pump or a picture?

We I had a Farymann A30 single in our Cal 29. Because the engine was so tall for the engine space we didnt adjust the valve clearance so that got too loose then the valve lifters at the cam started snagging each other ( I think that may be actual adjustment location). We’d start to rev up then suddenly lose all compression with a stuck valve and it would sound like a truck engine brake. It also had some endemic overheat issue which I couldn’t pin down but mght have been due to thermostat bypass port being corroded, not sure. Poor valve adjustment did’t help though.
To keep a raw-water cooled unit going for long life I would advise fresh water flush before shutting down for the week, like one gallon. Adding fresh water cooling is worth consideration, especially for the twin cylinder models. Keep your valve clearance adjusted and check head bolt torque. That engine was cashiered after we found serious scratches on the cylinder From the recent torture. I also learned you shouldn’t attempt to pull the cylinder without first a pressure wash as lots of grime gets trapped right around the cylinder base and then drops into crankcase! We replaced it with Yanmar 2GM20F and the extra power was welcome plus newer technology.
