I am replacing the water pump on my M-12. I have found that there where 2 different pumps on this model. 1 has a pump back plate to back of impeller at 3/8" and another has it at 1/2". I have taken mine off and it measures 3/8" so I know which one it is. Here is my quandry. I understand this motor was built using the Kubota Z-400 engine. I can get a water pump from a marine engine comapny at 300.00. I can get one for the Z-400 engine at about 110.00. The problem is that when i go to the tractor folks they don't know about the different pump at 1/2" vs the 3/8" and I can't tell for sure it is the right one. Anybody else had this experience and know which way to go. 190.00 is a big difference.

As long as the Kubota pump will fit, you should be fine. Last time I bought a raw water pump from Westerbeke/Universal it was over $400. So even $300 doesn't sound awful.

Update. I found a guy at a tractor parts shop on the internet and he measured the distance of his stock unit and it was 3/8" from the back of the mounting plate to the back of the impeller. I ordered it and since it was stock i can return it if it is not right. 107.00 vs 300.00. Who puts the outrageous mark up on them. Westrabake or the marine parts house???

I got the new pump via UPS today and it looks like the tractor pump is an exact fit. I will know for sure when i try and install it this weekend. Do i just use the new gasket. It looked like the old one had some kind of sealant besides just the gasket

I like to give the gasket a little permatex myself, presuming it's an impregnated cardboard-type.
