Hello all, just put a deposit on a 1968 Ericson 30' (draft is 5', air draft is 35') that is located in Ft. Myers. I need to get it over to miami, but I have never had to this trip before.
So i am wondering if there are tips or advice on the pros and cons of doing the ditch thru Okeechobee or down around the keys and up.
Planning on spending a weekend or 2 getting boat sorted for the run, but not sure about running the engine for almost 2 days to get across the canal.
I would rather run down and around, but the predominate winds are N-NE... not exactly pleasant.

Thanks in advance! Oz

This time of year you are better off in the canal. You might want to borrow/rent a spare dinghy w. outboard for the trip as "insurance" since you don't know really how the new engine will perform over time under load. Suggest you get the engine thoroughly checked out and have new filters and impeller and oil + spares for the trip.
Also...sign up for BoatUS or SeaTow Towing in advance of the trip. It can save you a lot of $$.
Good luck with the new boat!
