Hi all,

I have another question about the boat and would appreciate your experience and expertise.

It has a furling boom....and I have to be very careful or the boom detaches from the mast. When the sail furls, because it is still in the slot in the mast, it tends to furl to the edge of the boom and I think that helps push the boom away from the mast.

The other day, with the sail furled, I tightened up the mainsheet and the boom fell right off. I realized later that my topping lift was wrapped around itself and I am sure that didn't help, but it seems like a real precarious situation at best.

Is there supposed to be a washer or something that holds the boom on? Right now there is just a smooth pin on the mast that the boom slides over. It seems like there should be something at the end of the pin to make it more secure. Then again, I am not sure how you would attach it after the boom is already on the mast.

Am I missing something? Thanks for your help!

Surely something is very wrong with your setup. Pics would help but surely the boom should be securely attached to the mast. Sooo ......

Here are some pictures of mine before I bought a new main with a loose foot. BTW, this is not the original way the tack is connected. It was my jury rig. Here is a pic of the original rig from another boat.

I don't use the furling boom. My main sheet jam cleat is actually on the end of the boom which doesn't allow the boom to spin. See here.

To answer your question, if you were to drill out the rivets that holds the cast aluminum end on the boom, you would probably find a nut fell off, or if there are no thread then the shaft bolt broke off in the boom.
Sooner or later you will probably abandon the furling boom due to all the problems you are discovering, make some modifications and just flake it on top of the boom.

Thank you Wayne for all of the photos! My rig looks like yours when you first purchased it. The tack of my sail actually goes on the the "halyard type clip" that you show empty on your photo.


I took a look again at the pin and realized that what I thought were just imperfections in the metal were actually a nubs of a cotter pin that had sheered off on both ends. I was able to hammer it through, frill out the rivets on the boom, put a new pin in, and screw the "boom cap" back onto the boom.

I had intended to include photos of the process but they will have to wait. Had a heck of a day. I think that the metal bracket that mounts to the keel cable and keel may have come off of the keel. The keel was hanging down even though the cable seems to be cranked all the way up.


I got help to run an anchor line under the boat on both sides. We were able to raise the keel by running the line through the stern cleats and to the winches.

I was going to get bottom painting done. Looks like it's time.

My Tartan 27' came with a roller boom reefing system. I never used it and used slab or jiffy reefing instead which works well.
Center board/swing keel cable and/or fittings need to be fixed.

Helms 25'?

Hi Caleb!

Yes, it is a Helms 25'. It looks like it is partially set up for jiffy reefing with the pulley and a cleat installed. I think I would just need to do a little more work to make it a full jiffy reefing setup.

Also thinking about adding lazy jacks.

If that ever happened to me, That is how i was thinking of getting the centerboard back up.
Here is a couple of pictures of my Pendant. It's nothing more than two bronze straps, pins and a swag connection. I have every reason to believe that is the original set up, but not sure.




While you have it up on slings, look at the roller up in the trunk and see if it rotates. If it doesn't it might have a groove cut in it by the pendent cable. Also look to see if the cable has a groove worn into the fiberglass in the hole at the top of the trunk. If it does, let me know and I have an easy fix for you.
