Well I think the watch would work well for repeating wind instruments, but not chart plotter. Seems it could be really good for a whole team, especially if you had a watch like display that was perhaps a bit bigger, along the lines of say 3 inches. You could have scrolling instructions as well. Better than shouting, and would not give away your intentions to the competition. Could be good for a husband/wife team during anchoring.I think a smart watch tied into boat instruments looks more useful than Google Glass (and it is probably easier to see in bright sunshine too).
It's my guess that the Navy and commercial interests will get the hud helmet first. I can see both Con & Flight Deck Officer wearing them on the bridge of an aircraft carrier. Probably good for Cargomaster on a freighter, too. How long to trickle down to the private sector I don't know, but I'll bet some talented hardware & software hackers could work wonders with a set of VR goggles. If they haven't already. This is where Google Glass can come into its own. Becoming a HUD display for all types of sports.
What they need to sell the concept is to show it on a racing yacht where the helmsman has full charting, wind instruments and overlayed position of the next mark/waypoint etc. maybe even a feed from a bow or masthead camera.
Thats what I want! Like a fighter jet pilots helmet I want the total control right in my face. It doesnt matter if it still needs a wire or two for power.

Thanks for the heads-up, Greg.Mark,
It's already here... Well it's already in pre-sales. AFTERGUARD | Heads Up Display for Sailing
I like it! But it doesnt appear to have charts, radar etc overlayMark,

With the StartSequence, Virtual Tactician and Performance Dashboard screens,
Maybe they're taking a page from Bill Gates' playbook, and those will be available for a nominal fee when you upgrade to the Mk-II or 'Pro' version.I like it! But it doesnt appear to have charts, radar etc overlay
He's already out there, and doesn't need GGlass to make him a distracted menace.Oh goody goody goody. Another bit of tech designed to take one's attention away from the real world and immerse us deeper in the virtual one. I can imagine some cretin running down a channel at 20 knots with his attention split between his heads up display, a couple of other gadgets that aren't interfaced into it yet, and a tiny bit of attention on the real world. I'm going to feel so much safer out there on the water, yes I am. Thanks, Google.
Not yet. I have no idea what they are planning but they have stepped in as a sponsor for Sailing Anarchy and seem to be progressing towards the market quickly. I would guess once the basics are in place adding more screens would be the easy part, but I have no idea.I like it! But it doesnt appear to have charts, radar etc overlay
... or someone coming for his first attempt at docking with Captain Ron running in his Glass? *grin*Oh goody goody goody. When I am sailing I do it the way I have always done it, long before all this tech stuff - by looking at the world around me and making decisions based on what I can see/feel/smell. If there is an element that I can't see and think I need to know it (depth, radar in fog, wind nuances) then I refer to the electronics.Oh goody goody goody. But him watching his GGlass and me watching my GGlass - mmmmm. He's already out there, and doesn't need GGlass to make him a distracted menace.
