Hi all

I have a Garmin 440 that takes a SD card. I am using FUGAWI and want to put the routes on a SD card and then up load them into the 440.

Anybody know the format that the Garmin 440 uses?

Or, better still - anybody using a 440 and FUGAWI??

What you need is a data translation program that speaks Fugawi and Garmin. The problem is that the two probably use different data formats. What kind of PC do you have?

I am running Vista on a Dell PC

FUGAWI exports in a number of formats including GPX (which Garmin purports to read)

Yes, Garmin's software will read it, and then you can export it to the SD card.

Does the 440 save everything (tracks, waypoints, routes) in a file with a .adm extension (UserData.adm)? I have the 540 and have found that almost no one has PC charting software that understands this file format.

The ones I've found are:

GPS Utility: the free version will only transfer a limited number of waypoints.
The full version is $60 I think.

Garmin Trip & Waypoint manager: This is what I went with, it's about $25 I think and it will read and write several of the more common waypoint/track formats (like gpx). Between that and GPSBabel you should be able to convert to most any format. I had to update the software online before it would read my card, but this wasn't hard to do. I put the card into my cardreader and the program will load all the data.

It would be nice if GPSBabel would work directly on the adm file but no one has written that translator yet as far as I can tell.

I downloaded G7ToWin and did not find a choice to save files as UserData.ADM

You can't save it as an ADM file. You have to use the Garmin software to import it and then use it to download the waypoints and routes to the card reader.

Well - I have tried just about everything except Garmin Trip & Waypoint manager. The GPS utility seems to work.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a copy of Garmin Trip & Waypoint Manager and download it. As we are working our way up the coast - we will not be anywhere I can have something mailed for three more weeks.

The summary of where I am now with Garmin

Greetings all - and as always - thanks for all the help, suggestions and cabbitzing.

FUGAWI mapping software (I really like it)
Garmin 440 chart plotter (I like it)

I tried Trip and Waypoint Manager from Garmin:

I have two computers on board, an old IBM (XP) and new Dell (Vista)
It would not load in the IBM - kept saying there was a problem with the Registry - please re-load - no go!

I got it loaded onto the Dell - but it would not upgrade to the newest version. It says "The MapSource version 6.15.6.0 update is available" then takes ten minutes to download and then gives me a error message: "Invalid command line parameter (restart)".

SO - I emailed Garmin Support - no answers
I called the support number - was on hold for 45 minutes before I gave up and hung up
I walked up to Hamilton Marine and got my money back

I played with GPS Utility - free version. It did what I needed but a bit clunky. I bought the full version on-line and now it does what I need - full size routes, lots of waypoints, but still a bit clunky - but I can live with klunky instead of Garmin software that won't even load. (And I have always liked my other Garmin products)

So - I create routes, save them as .GPX, convert them in GPS Utility and save as UserData.ADM and put them on the SD card and then into the Garmin

At least I don't have to put the routes in one waypoint at a time

It is a rain-day on the Rockland ME dock. We have hot water for showers, electricity and free wifi. Cold drinks in the ice box, Best of the Eagles on the speakers and we are happy campers.
