I might have to make some gaskets for my Yanmar 2qm 15 exhaust manifold vintage 77', no big deal they are just squares and holes . But because they will get hot I'm thinking I should be careful on material ( the old ones are a thick paper ). Any thoughts, advice ? Thanks , Mark .

Any auto parts store has a pack with various thickness and material gasket sheets available inexpensively. Many gaskets may appear to be just paper but they are not. Some are impregnated with heat resistant chemicals, etc.
I'd have one aboard just on general principles.

Many of those old "paper" gaskets have asbestos fiber in them. The original type material may not be available any longer. There are more modern materials available, I would check and see what Yanmar is selling for this application.

Check with McMaster Carr or Graingers for industrial gasket materials

Somone told me that many of the square exhaust gaskets are standard size. The big square hole and the 4 bolt holes are standard.

Bring your gasket to a Yanmar dealer and they can match one up for you. I wouldn't trust silicone for those kinds of temps. The exhaust gaskets on my motor are all made of graphite (yup same stuff as pencil lead).

Hey , you guys are great that was a lot of really good info . The old gaskets on my little Yanmar were the originals, as luck would have it my new ones came in today , and they don't look like the old ones they look better . Just out of curiosity I asked my parts guy if he could get the manifold , he laughed . Again thanks . Mark
