Hi All,

I was looking at my engine control panel (Universal 5424) and I do not have any type of fuse/circuit breaker between the power source and momentary (hold) switch and the glow plugs. The schematic shows a fuse, but no details. I'm thinking I need something here. What are your thoughts? How big should this "fuse" be?

Dave unless you upgrade the whole system you most likely won't find any fuses. Engines (don't quote me on this) with more then 2 glow coils use a relay. Do you also have an ammeter in the engine panel?

VW diesels I had used a solenoid with a time out device. IIRC, a long time ago, they were fused, at least 50 amps, in the main fuse panel, I think? If powered through a solenoid the fuse could/should be ahead of it. Not sure if glow plugs are subject to shorting? Going open? yes.

A shop manual may provide details. If it shows a fuse, probably be a good idea to add one?

Our Westerbeke has a circuit breaker that seemed cleverly hidden until someone showed we were it is mounted on the back of a bracket with just a round reset button showing. The engine had been repainted and it was the same colour as everything else.

When I got the boat the old Universal ammeter had been taken out. The old trailer style harness connectors were still in, so I cut all that out also. I do not have a solenoid in the system either. I'm going to install a circuit breaker at the engine panel I think.
