Hi Folks,

I will be in the market for a “good old boat” within 23-27 foot range. I would prefer a “sail way” condition daysailer. I haven’t narrowed it down to a make or model yet, I want to keep my options open. Light wind sailer would be a plus. I will be doing the bulk of my sailing in the Potomac, Occoquan Rivers and Chesapeake Bay for the foreseeable future.

My budget for a turn key boat is about 5K including slip fees (my HOA) won’t allow stowage on the property.

I’ve been monitoring craigslist and been to a couple of the local marinas. Had one dealer show me a 1988 Hunter 240? That fit within my budget, he stated that she is sailable now after a good power wash. I am sure it would be if it wasn’t for a gaping hole in the transom.

I subscribe to good old boat and small craft advisor plus I have a couple of DIY books on refitting and surveying.

I would like to solicitate for advice from folks that have been there done that and point me in the right direction before I commit a “kings ransom” to the project.

Thanks
Nick

Make sure the rig, deck, and hull is in good condition. If the sails don't have holes in them, that's a plus as well, but new/used sails are pretty easy to come by if you're not picky.

Nick,

I have an 1983 Catalina 22 than I used to sail on the Potomac, however now her home port is now on the Rhode River just off the Chessy. I looked and found a Catalina for sale at Washington Sailing Marina, however the one I ended up buying was down in Deltaville. I would expand your search more out towards the Chessy (I once even went up to Havre de Grace to look at a Hinterhoeller Shark 24) as it looks like you are in the market and location for a trailer sailer.

I would highly recommend the Catalina 22 or 25 for you as they are a great production boat, have a great following, and parts are easy to find all at one website (www.catalinadirect.com).

Thanks VASailor10,

Got some sage advice on trying out different models before I buy, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem, I’m lucky enough to have a choice of about 5 marinas within driving distance.

I did see a couple of boats down by the Deltaville area. Right now I’m exploring and researching as much as possible. I do like the lines of the Sailmaster at Deal MD; of course I haven’t seen her in person. I should be up that way next weekend. I found out I can’t take to much stock in pictures posted on the net.

Quantico

There are a couple of small sailboats listed for sale in the marina at Quantico, if you have the credentials to get on the base. I can't remember the specifics on them - I'll check the board when I am down there this weekend.

I'll be there

I'll be there in the early afternoon. My sailboat is on the hard there and I am finishing up the bottom getting ready to launch. My boat is a Santana 35 - copper bottom (for another day), white and blue topsides.
