I have personally always been a bit cynical. They are advertised in a very aspirational way for extreme sports such as snowboarding, skydiving, surfing etc... And yes, if you do need a light weight waterproof camera that you can take with you to the top of K2 for a base jump back down again then I am sure they are great!

I have dabbled for a while now with some filming and editing mainly around boats and with regard to the yacht deliveries we undertake.

I originally used a Xacti and now also have a Panasonic HC-X900. I have never considered a GoPro with any seriousness until recently one of our crew sent some footage over that he had taken during the delivery of a Jeanneau 43 from the UK to Greece. Amazing underwater shots!

I enjoyed editing this short film, although do feel quite envious!

So, should I ask Santa for a GoPro this year?

Bought GoPros for both of my boys and both used them a lot. One of my boys is no longer alive and his Gopro moments are prescious to me beyond words.

I am so glad my wife chose to buy them for the boys.

Pete, from what I've heard the GoPro cameras are "best in class". Great video, built stronger than anything else. Everyone else is still playing catch-up.

I cant speak about any others but my GoPro has been all over. It works great on the boat, fits in a backpack or even in the pocket of my jacket, quite a versatile piece. Never have to worry about anything other than remembering to keep it charged. Great video quality and accessory mounts are cheap and can be bought anywhere...even westmarine!

My oldest son is a fanatic snow skier and uses a Go Pro to record stuff that scares the @rap out of us. Excellent quality, and if some of the falls he takes can't break it then I don't know what could. Makes me want to get one, but I never do anything interesting)

I'd suggest much shorter videos. Check out the stats on yours on YouTube, you can see how long people watch it for

I was cynical too, but my youngest go one and brought it on our last trip. they are very well made and well thought out.

That where you are totally wrong. Spike left me a treasury of videos of his "regular life".
He would put the Gopro on his head while working at the forge. He would not say a thing. He just video's his work while he did it. He made a video of how to bake an apple pie. He put the Gopro on his head and rode his motor scooter through the neighborhood.
He video'd feeding his pet turtle, Diamond, soy beans.

In time those mundane looks into someone's life can be very valuable.
I would bet you do a lot of interesting things.

Have been researching a waterproof camera/video camera for the boat. The GoPro was initially my first thought but in looking at recent customer reviews, it seems like there are quite a few negative ratings about QC issues. I am leaning toward a Lumix now. It gets great reviews and takes 16mp pix as well as video. Would be interested to hear what other sailors have to say about their experiences with cameras for use on the boat.

I have one. Stunning quality above and below the water line. I use mine on the boat, motorcycle and airplane. Works fantastic on all.

No screen, not user friendly. Comes with nice case, many mounts...great camera.. Its a fish eye so it distorts buildings but not too bad. Its like 140 degrees of view.

I love my GoPros so much so I have 3. I use them for work, (I work in the TV News Business), I use them for pleasure. I cannot say enough about these tough little beauties. I have mounted them on Boats, cars, bikes, skis, Surfboards, RC Helicopters, real Helicopters, had them under water, over water, over lava and the list goes on. For the price you just can't beat 'em.
I am wanting to mount one on a kite so I can get a nice arial wide shot of my 27 Catalina under full sail.

On the boat I have had them mounted on a Halyard just for photos not video, on the pulpit, on the pushpit, on a boom, on the dodger frame and on a boat hook. I have wifi back packs for them so I can roll the cameras remotely.
Regardless of which POV camera you choose, remember keep that camera safely rolling.
