I had been using a garmin 541s for about 8 years.
I decided it was time for an upgrade and ordered a 4212.
I wanted something to display radar, ais and a chart, all at once.
Well, here is what I got....
woah....

I thought it would be smaller.....

The 7" was my first choice, but comparing them the 7 was slightly bigger.
I thought the 12 would only be slightly bigger then the 7.......
I may still get a 7 for below decks.
I am trying to sell the 541s now.

The "12" part of 4212 means it is a 12" screen... 12" plotters are quite large...

What are you trying to sell the 541s for? I might be interested. I'd like a small unit for my 26 Footer.

So it's bigger then the specs? https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-water/discontinued/gpsmap-4212/prod8114.html
Physical dimensions: 14.8" x 9.5" x 4.6" (37.6 x 24.1 x 11.7 cm)
It's fine to display data in more than one window (split screen)
This picture is stolen from Panbo, showing a different Garmin Panbo: The Marine Electronics Hub: Gizmo Thanksgiving, & the Garmin 740 networked

Exactly!

They're measured in the same way TV's, phones, and computers, by the screen size.

I was looking at the 740s as my next one, but since the 741xs came out, that one is looking good now.
Just not on the top of the project list at the moment.

Reading the specs? Pulling out a tape measure? Seriously?

That old adage about measuring before cutting is SO Twentieth Century...

:)

NEVER!!!:hothead
Actually this reminds me of the time I bought a 60" TV for my apartment I was living in. It was as big as the wall that was 8' from the couch. Was fun to play xbox on thou.

Equipment always seems to look/be larger on one's boat than it does in a Vendor's showroom. When looking at GPS/Chartplotters, we did use cardboard to make a simple mock-up of the display devices for our Nav Table and Helm Station and found, in both cases, that the smaller displays were quite sufficient. And, the actual gear proved to be as well.

FWIW...

Yeah, this seems to be a bit of a humble-brag.

"Oh, pity me, this new chart plotter is just so large I don't know what to do with it!"

You paid for that size...

One should ideally be thinking in terms of product service life. Older models or discontinued models are the first ones to run out of parts and become obsolete and not even repariable.

Once they discontinue a product it is 1-5 years before they run out of parts and no fixy for them. Popular models run out of parts fastest.

I get to deal with this almost every single day and this is why I always recommend purchasing the latest product not the recently discontinued or about to be discontinued product. You will get the longest service life from the most recent products.. I have customers that have bought stuff and two or three years later could not even get it fixed. The value in that is poor in terms of product-life costs........ The best purchase price deal may not be the best overall deal... The nice thing about Garmin marine network is that it is backwards compatible and old models work with newer ones..

I plan to do another refit in 5 years. $10,000 budget. I have come to realize its a 5 year cycle, cruise 5 refit 1-2 cruise again. We will see if this is reality or not.
