I have been sailing for years, but I think I need to get into the 21st century and buy a GPS. This is what I think I would use it for. I am predominantly daysailing on a 26'' sailboat on Lake Michigan. The fog can roll in unexpectedly especially in the spring.

1) What features should I look for in a unit?

2) What price range would I be paying for a unit with these features?

3) What brands should I look at, and are there any I should stay away from, or any that are easier to use?

I''ve done a bit of research since posting my question.
Anybody have opinions on:
Garmin III+
Garmin 48
These are the 2 hand held units that I have narrowed my search to.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I don''t know what happened, but I posted something, and now I learned it did not come through. However I would stick to the G 48. You don''t need the roar maps of the G III, so why pay for them.
Have you gone to the Garmin.com page where you can compare all their models.

The only point is the display measure. Indeed all handhelds have that tiny display.

Finally, you will need to buy the 12 volt adapter. If you are the kind of DIY, you will only need the 12 volt and data cable instead of the cigarrete lighter cable.
