I rented a transient slip at Townsend Marina this past season, and loved Greenport so I want to move my C&C 32 there next summer. Basically I will drive in from Jersey City for the weekends, that's the plan.

I inquired into Stirling marina, a little costly but seems like a real high-end facility and the more distant slips in that marina are still comparable to Townsend cost wise.

Does anyone have marina recommendations for this area (Greenport/North Fork)?

You may want to look into Mattituck.

But, IMHO, if you're planning to "commute" on the weekends to the East End from Jersey, it's best to do it in a helicopter rather than driving a car, YMMV.

As you know slip, fees on the North Shore of LI are quite high. Have you considered mooring, possibly closer to JC like either Oyster Bay or Huntington?

Driving from NJ to the Greenport every weekend sounds awful. Are you really sure you understand what you would be getting into. I second considering Port Washington, Glen Cove, Oyster Bay, Huntington or Northport. Both Port Washington and Glen Cove have Brewers marinas. Oyster Bay, Huntington and Northport are mostly moorings - some for yacht clubs and others with public launch service.

Yes I am aware of the driving situation, done it a few times actually, and this wouldnt be an every weekend sort of thing prob a once a month thing. Plus every year I take a 5-10 day cruise to new england , this jump off point extends my range by 48 hours of actual sailing miles.

Plus as a destination, theres really no comparing oyster bay to the north fork...

If this is your motivation, I would go up the CT shoreline to the Mystic area. I dare say, you could drive to southern RI in the same time it will take to transit Long Island, then you would really have your cruising options open.

I don't know if the other Brewer Yard in Greenport is any cheaper than Sterling Harbor. Back a few years ago, it tended to have more sailors but was not quite as picturesque. It is only 100 yards down the road from Sterling Harbor. For me it was the yard of choice for leaving my boat for the winter. It is the best yard I have ever been to by far and the manager, Mike Acebo, is as good as one gets.

One option of being in Greenport is that you can choose not to drive to get there. Once in NYC, easy to get to from Jersey City, you can take a train or a Hampton Jitney on their North Fork line. It takes a while but you can read or listen to books on tape (or try to reconcile Einstein's Theory of General Relativity with String Theory) or just nap. I did this for years with Sag Harbor as my home port when I lived in NYC. I'd leave the car out there and let the Jitney drive deal with the traffic.

The train is a great idea. For giggles, I just checked Amtrak from Penn Station to Mystic. A 3hr train ride is no doubt faster than driving to Greenport.

I'm only hung up on Mystic, as I think it's roughly equidistant and, IMO, offers better cruising options. To get out of Greenport, you essentially need to deal with the Race or at least be exposed to ocean conditions. Mystic is protected by Fisher's Island Sound and is closer to popular New England destinations.

Our boat was on a state park mooring there 12 months, I think it cost the PO 1800 a year.

The problem with Greenport is that getting clear of Gardiner's Bay out past Plum, Great and Little Gull Islands is quite a hike through some uncomfortable waters. Gardiner's Bay seems to have a nasty short chop constantly and getting out the north side requires going through Plum Gut and then The Race or all the way out past Fisher's Island. Sailing in LIS is less than spectacular most summer days. Also, I cannot imagine commuting out there on the one lane road/parking lot or paying LI prices for dockage/storage. If I was going to keep a boat to be near the best sailing, I'd want to be closer to Block/Newport and the Islands, somewhere on the northern shoreline of Conn, RI, or Mass.

Regarding smurphny's comment on traffic: Ever get on I-95 East on a Friday in the summer? You can walk faster than you can drive. And I think you will find that slip rates in Connecticut and RI and Massachusetts will be comparable to those in Greenport. As to sailing in Gardner's Bay, I have found it a wonderful place to sail. (I called Sag Harbor home port for 18 years.) And there a dozen places where you can drop the hook for the night within a 45 minute to 1 1/2 hours sail from your slip, plus Newport and Block Island are only a day sail away.

But a wordof warning. The recession is over for lots of folks and slips rent fast these days. So decide soon or you won't be in any of the places discussed.

Sure have. I think I get frequent rider miles. Helpful to get a jump on it or leave late.

No doubt, there are choke points on I-95. However, there is nothing on this planet as tough as the Long Island Expressway. I will take the CT route over Long Island.

I USE to be a member of Orient Yacht Club and it was great fun BUT the drive just from Patchogue sucked the joy out of it

Seriously the North Fork has become a wine tasting HELL traffic JAM never mind getting past all the stores that are in Riverhead NOW

So now i live in Commack and keep the boat in Northport and i can hop on for a sail after work and no longer fret about the boat being OK

We cruised out to Greenport for a week last summer to visit friends and after a week of dodging ferry's again and REALLY NEEDING to plan around the current i did not miss it all that much
