I need to replace the 9 loop deck rails and 6 loop interior hand rails on my C&C30 MK1. they where terrible in shape when i bought the boat 2012. I refinished them and rebedded, but they have served the old girl well. I have checked the web found a few sources, but I wonder if any owners have found the exact replacement ones? Let me know. Also, The hand rails sandwich the coach top anybody know what is used for fasteners in them? I dont want to screw them up causing a leak befor I get the new ones here.
Thanks for your time. Capt Curt.

Contact Bob Haney [email protected] in Ithica, NY. They are making new set for our C & C 32, quoted $18/loop. They will need a sample. Ours are through bolted with 3/16 diameter flat head machine screws with washers and nuts under the pull down headliner. I think your headliner is molded fiberglass, there are removable plastic plugs to give access.

Your design may be the same as my Hinterhoeller HR28, as Hinterhoeller was one of the founders of C&C and his yard built them. For me, the span of each loop was different than any prefab teak rails I could find so I had a woodworking friend make me new ones using the old ones for dimensions. Don Casey's books have good descriptions for making them, my friend said it was a straightforward fun project. He used some tropical wood which is teak-like, but less expensive.

The project turned out very well. 325 dollars for two 6 loop rails and two 4 loop rails.

I've seen a company that makes wood replacements out of StarBoard too - even in a 'teaky' colour.

$1,362.00 for some shaped wood?????????? W T F !!!!!!!!!!
Please tell me that is in East Caribbean dollars.

Do you have the old ones to use as patterns? If you have the old ones to use as a pattern any wood worker worth his weight in sawdust can make these for you at a lot less than what was quoted. Last time I checked teak prices it was $24.00 a board foot. That was the last time I looked at it. Some exterior woods that come to mind are IPE, makore and cypress and maybe Spanish Cedar. Interior, cherry is always classic as well as walnut or mahogany.

To do it yourself, a jig saw, a hand palm sander and a drill would make it easier.

I can't let this go. I went to Steve Wall lumber web site, located in Mayodan, NC 27027. They have teak for $22.00 a board foot. You need a piece for the outside rails 10 foot long by 6 inch wide which is 5 board feet for $110.00, inside 3.5 bd ft for $80.00. That is $200.00. And that is retail pricing.

I looked at the how-to in Don Casey's book a while back, seemed very do-able. Maybe if there is a bend in the rail it would be tricky. This is really a project that, compared to a professional using teak, a DIY using cheaper wood, would save a boat buck or ten (depending on the exchange rate).

If they are teak, I really wonder if they are in such a bad shape that they cannot be restored.
Mine were bad, I removed them, one pass with an 80grit, one pass with 120 and one pass with 180, then varnish and they are new again.

Unless they are split, cracked or much of the soft wood is gone, I'll bet they can be restored, but you have to remove them. Carefully remove the teak bungs and fasteners and then sand. You mentioned that you rebbeded them, did you really take them off?

Try removing them, you are planning to replace anyway, its not a big deal if you are careful. Place a tape over the holes while you work on them, I find the aluminum tape used by plumbers work the best as they are waterproof.

Yea I may dust try to re-bed the old ones. I just have one threw screw weeping a bit into the cabin. So I pulled the plug out of the one hole and tried to tighten it up and the dam thing aint getting tighter. Its just pulling threw the upper hand rail. That means the wood in the upper hand rail fastener hole is soft. I will try to use epoxy drill it out and re-bed the hardware. then I will re-bed all the handrails I guess.

I did not re-bead them like taking them all the way off. I only put butle tape under the topside screw holes and then sanded them down and used teak oil. So no I did not do a "real" re-bed like I am going to do now. How to answer the other question "Yes they are splitting and very thin in some places. They are borderline dangerous. I mean if someone was to stumble and kick there foot in the center on the loops it may break under there foot. I will do as you say I thing and completely, sand refinish and re-bed and save some money to buy new ones in the fall.

On '85 C & C 32 loop diameter is asymetrical - 7/8 wide x 3/4" high (yeah, C & C esthetic design always at play), only replacing both because one loop was cracked and epoxied by PO, that work has let go so rather than replace one getting a new set. $18 x 12 loops = $216, plus NY tax. Will make it an 8 hour round trip to pick up in Ithaca, photo adventure for my wife, lunch in wine country.
