I have a Universal M50 diesel and I am cleaning up the heat exchanger and need new gaskets for the two end plates.

Can I replace the old gaskets with gasket material I buy from the auto store? I think I saw some suitable for the coolant system. Would these be OK?

Thanks - jballou

jb, the art of cutting gasket material is a lost art. But the process still works as well as it always did.

Gasket material (the correct material & thickness for the purpose) or even a product like Permatex "Form A Gasket" should be perfectly good, as long as it is the right thickness, and suitable for use in coolant. Probably a lot cheaper and faster than ordering gen-you-whine marine gaskets, as long as you don't mind cutting it to match.

Hmm - the gasket material I am finding is not as thick as the gaskets on the heat exchanger that need replacing. The original gaskets were about 1mm think and quite rubbery.

Any suggestions on material that I can use? An old auto tire inner tube?

thanks -

you can coat homemade gaskets with that rubber compund I forget the name...it will add to the thickness if not ask for other gasket materials...there many to chose from, cork, rubber, paper, etc...

making gaskets is great, I made them all the time on my motorcycle as it saved me from having to wait for shipping from the states...

pay attention to thickness like mentioned and youll be fine...and dont go overboard with the usea of sealants...a thin film is all thats needed...

cheers

And if all else fails, usually NAPA stores have a better selection of "real" auto supplies like that. Inner tube rubber used to be good stuff, but I have no idea what it actually is these days, and it is often not flat.

Grainger and McMaster, both online and with nationwide stores, carry these type of materials in a very wide range for industrial customers.
