you can coat homemade gaskets with that rubber compund I forget the name...it will add to the thickness if not ask for other gasket materials...there many to chose from, cork, rubber, paper, etc...

making gaskets is great, I made them all the time on my motorcycle as it saved me from having to wait for shipping from the states...

pay attention to thickness like mentioned and youll be fine...and dont go overboard with the usea of sealants...a thin film is all thats needed...
