I have a Universal M50 diesel and I am cleaning up the heat exchanger and need new gaskets for the two end plates.

Can I replace the old gaskets with gasket material I buy from the auto store? I think I saw some suitable for the coolant system. Would these be OK?

Hmm - the gasket material I am finding is not as thick as the gaskets on the heat exchanger that need replacing. The original gaskets were about 1mm think and quite rubbery.

Any suggestions on material that I can use? An old auto tire inner tube?
