Finally getting back to work on our 1972 Helms 25. Noting rusty stains on the sides of the centerboard trunk outer hull. Fount a shop magnet sticks on it just fine though the steel centerboard keel is not in the centerboard trunk. Looking for suggestions for possible cure for this new problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is a photo of Helms ballast arrangement. 5/8 diaX1/2" thick carbon steel punch. This is a 1974 disassembled, I would guess in 72 the same, there is resin, just not totally filled.
I'd check the cracks where the bleed occurs for evidence of structural cracking...or just deep gouges from grounding. You could enlist a variety of repairs from major work to just grind out and fill.

Thanks for the good feedback. Must be pretty dry by now - a good grinding away of bad pits and fill with good glass-fibred fill should get her done. Will let you know how it goes.

Got the keel dry with blowers and this 90 degree heat we are having. Will grind out exterior rusty places and fill with red hand or other like patch. All appear small on the exterior. Getting the water out was a biggie. Got the cockpit covered and the openings cut to dry the plywood core. Will saturate with CPES or GitRot and then resurface with watertight layer and coating then texture. Should take care of things. Retired now - getting more done in the areas we enjoy.
