I just went through something similar with a friend. Its impossible to tell them that the boat is worth much less than what they have in it. Now years later he wants to give it to me, but I've moved on and have a boat.

Let them name a price; if its too high, tell them you will ask around if anyone wants it.

I think Maine Sail's point is that a brand new motor on an old sailboat might only increase the value of the old sailboat by a couple of hundred dollars.

The brand new motor sold on it's own and the sailboat sold with no motor (or an old motor bought cheaply on CL) would probably fetch more than the two together.

Electric start doesn't mean that the motor has to have remote controls. Tohatsu has some reasonably priced electric start motors that work nicely on most outboard powered sailboats. I think they add about $100 to the price and you get the alternator too.
This one has the remote control package.
I'll go down the boat the next couple of days and put in some gas and see how it runs and take some pictures and maybe take it out for a spin and see just what condition it is really in. There may be some exterior painting issues also.
Based on my limited experience no matter how wonderful most things are the slightest thing less than perfect is what potential buyers seem to focus on.
A bad paint job on the deck would be a huge problem from a resale point of view.

With any kind of luck I may have convinced them to keep it another year. I'm thinking that if they have a good season it will turn things around for them.

Keep in mind these boats have plywood laminated into the keel stubs and steel keel bolts. This project alone can easily exceed the value. It would be pretty rare to see a 1975 without the plywood damp to wet...
How do you find that out?
If the nuts start digging into the sump when tightened?

The P26 is a great boat, generally built like a tank. I never saw water in the bilge of mine, which I sailed hard all the time. If you did discover water ingress under way, it would seem to be a fairly straightforward DIY project.

my gal bought a 74 p26 two years ago. it was with a trailer. it had been sitting for a couple of years. Needed paint and TLC.

we paid a thousand for it. on the way home her sons bought the trailer off of her.

we now tell people we bought a trailer and got a boat for free.

p26's are a dime a dozen. you have been well advised to not buy, and help them sell. even if the boat is in perfect shape they won't get anywhere near what they've got into it. (IMHO).

BTW, it's a fun little lake boat :)

probably too late to post to this string, but I'm the lucky owner and here is the boat. Asking $7500 on Craiglist (Branford, CT) and be happy to part with it for $6,000 to all the great people of Sailnet that have helped us through some problems and provided support. Willing to negotiate but there's more than what is listed on the add.

One day I will try and find a picture of the 12 Anderson Archtop windows I put in my last house

A house is expected to have windows and the fact that I dropped 10K on appearance it added no real value to the house it just sold faster

He has really slaved over it and done a ton of work on it.
