Hello. I have a Volvo Penta 2002 and need to replace the rear motor mount. Any idea how I can jack it up? There is very little room under the transmission and some room but not much up front but don't know if i can effectively jack up the rear from the front? The other idea I had was to use a come along or pulley from the boom to lift it? Any ideas would be helpful. I need a super small jack I guess (short)? Thanks.

usually you can find a place to use a lever or crowbar on the frame or structure, have some one apply pressure, while you slip a block or pair of wedges under.

You will need to at least loosen the other mount on the side you are working to get movement. Other boats may have a shelf/tray or other structure that you can use as a lift point to do the coffin hoist.

best of luck

You will have to free both rear mounts. The wee nuts are likely to be rusted in there and may be reluctant to move. A big chunk of 4"x4" (or similar) could be wedged in there to lift the motor at the back.

You will need to disconnect the gearbox first, of course.

I've heard someone mention inflating a basketball under their engine to lift it. I haven't tested it myself, but you might try some research along that route.
I suppose you could evens slip a football under there, just make sure it is not a Patriots' fan that is inflating it! :laugher

Go to a tool rental place and rent a "Portapower". This is a hydraulic power system with plenty of ends that will do almost any job from straightening bent metal (my davits) to lifting an engine by slipping the duck bill attachment underneath and lifting 1/4" to about 3". Don't forget to place some wood under the trany and on the hull if you have room, to spread the load.
There is usually the right tool for any job; you just have to know that it exists.

If there's enough clearance try a car scissor jack under the engine. Take care to place jack on strong part of engine and not at center of oil pan.

I used a simple car jack, braced with a 2 ea 2x4 to lift my old (now retired) Westerbeake 50 when I replaced my mounts. That was the easy part, getting the nuts off was a bit more of a challenge that caused many obscenities to be shouted. PB Blaster or similar for a few days helps.

I was able to use the jack from our VW Golf, spread the weight out using the 2x4, as mentioned, do not use the oil pan as the point of lift if you plan to keep it ;-)

On Maine sails tutorial he says use a Honda CRX spare tire jack- it has very low profile- I bought a used one cheap off e-bay a while back. Here is one:

Honda CRX Jack 89 90 91 92 | eBay
Even after approx 27 years it's still a tool I use fairly regularly..... I am sure that car is long gone but that little jack will live on.......

Wait.. Maine... You sold the car and kept the jack?
Yep.. No need for a jack with no spare tire.. The spare tire was tossed in favor of turning that well into a subwoofer, I was 17 and did some car audio work as one of my many teenage years jobs.......... The kid I sold it too loved the sound system and could have cared less it had no spare tire.. That's what AAA was for.........;) Today I have a spare tire and factory stereo....
