I-28 Propane locker?

1812 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  erps
I have a 1977 I-28. It could use a propane stove and heater here on the Maine cost. Some of the later I-28s apparently have propane stoves. Can any one share with me where their propane lockers are installed?

Thanks,

George

As far as I know, none of the Islander 28s came with stock propane anything. I did consider using propane and determined that the best location would be a externally vented locker located in the port quarter of the boat, accessed through either the lazarette or a new hatch on the aft end of the cockpit seating.

I eventually decided that it made more sense to go with diesel heating and a new unpressurized alcohol stove. Cheaper than fitting out with propane and safer all around.
Thanks,

There sure isn't much room to install a propane locker. I am thinking about a solid fuel heater. Another thought is to install a second heat exchanger and just store engine heat in the fw tank. We don't drink the water from the tank, usually, and having some warm water in the boat might be comfortable here on the Bay of Fundy. The problem with that is we don't use the engine much, less than ten hours last season. There is plenty of solid fuel to be had. I am O.K. with the alcohol stove.

I converted our alcohol stove to propane and hung a small cylinder off the back pushpit. May not have been right, but it worked for us.
