I'm pulling the inboard out of my 1975 24' Dufour and would love to not put an outboard on for a while while daysailing in SF this season. I can sail in and out of my slip most days, and I'm not going out on the ocean, so I basically just need something simple for the rare occasion where I have to get in our out of a marina finger at head to wind.

The gunnels of the cockpit on a Dufour 24 are way too high for oars, and I'm wondering if my transom mounted rudder may be of use.

Does anyone have experience with a Power Fin type setup?

I remember plenty of mid-winter races where there was no wind at all in the bay and tremendous currents, requiring us to spend most of a tide on the pick waiting for the change to send us in the right direction. Perhaps climate change has altered all that, but in my 13 years as a teen on the bay, in everything from El Toros to the Wanderer, it is one of the few places I would not consider it prudent to sail without auxiliary power.
I have rowed a 9' pram out to Point Bonita, and across the bay from Sausalito to the city and back numerous times, but I doubt one could do so with a 24' sailboat, should the need arise.

Speaking purely of our local waters we regularly end the day having to pick up our mooring into around 25knots and against the tide. Now it is not impossible of course but in a crowded mooring field I'm afraid that picking up a mooring under sail in those conditions is simply too stressful while on a busy harbour in a dead calm dodging ferries and other commercial shipping without an engine is not much fun.

Fifty years back I'd have thought differently but times and population density has moved on.

Get a little 12V electric trolling motor, tuck it in the lazaret, add a OB mount to the transom, and only pull the motor out and mount when you absolutely need to. If you're only going to use the motor for a few minutes every once in a blue moon you probably won't even need to upgrade you "house" batteries (assuming you have a 12V already installed).
