Going to install a couple of cockpit speakers and a receiver in my Hunter 23 sailboat. I may add a couple speakers to the cabin next year if all goes well. Just trying to get some confirmation that my receiver/ speaker combo will be ok together.

Looking at this receiver (not planning on installing an amp):

Peak: 50 watts x 4 channels

RMS: 17 watts x 4 channels

Marine In-Dash CD/MP3 Receiver w/ iPod Control, Internet Radio, Bluetooth and Sirius XM Ready

With these speakers:

Sensitivity: 92 dB
RMS Power Range : 75 Watts
Peak Power Handling: 225 Watts
Frequency response: 50-20000 Hz
Diameter: 6.5 Inch

Not so hard to do, your choice if you want to keep the saved AM/FM stations by connecting the memory save wire to the battery or not.

You probably already know this, but keep those speakers waaaaaaay away from the compass. Probably want to keep the stereo away too.

I'll second no holes in the boat... bookshelf speakers are better, and magnetically shielded speakers better still (see comment about compass and magnets).

I've found marine speakers are usually power hogs... 50w peak is probably barely enough to hear any distance (over rushing wind/water noise while doing 6 knots)... I had to put an additional 100w amp on mine, but then my bookshelf speakers are below.

I have a bookshelf unit velcro'd to the wall above my settee. It's got a radio, CD, and iPod port. At anchor it's more than enough. At sea it's enough for some background music.

If you are installing your radio in the cabin there is no reason to buy a marine radio. Get a car stereo; it will be cheaper and carry more amps and sound better too. Buy on line and install yourself. It's easy. Do buy marine speakers for your outside speakers though.

I'll chime in, and support the NO HOLES IN COCKPIT camp... ESPECIALLY on a 23 foot boat!

I installed a stereo for a guy on a 20' center console, only because I owed him a favor, and he already had the stereo and speakers. I swore that I would NEVER do that again - what a total PITA, for no practical gain. Here is a tip - TRIPLE check the clearances for everything, and have some Starboard ready just in case.

Get a 12V boom box if you must have tunes in the cockpit.

It has been established in another thread, that stereos on boats are rude and inconsiderate at any volume. Just plug your ears and hum.

I did not mean any offense in my prior posts, but simply wanted to point out the most cost effective solution to adding cockpit sound to a 23 foot boat; boom box: $40-$140, no installation required, no holes in boat, when it stops working (and they all will - even an installed stereo), simply buy a new one.

I bought one of these for my 22' boat. It's inexpensive and sounds good. It's portable so if you want music in the cockpit you put it in the cockpit, if you want music in the cabin put it in the cabin.

And since it's Bluetooth anyone can connect to it. If you have a guest on board and they want to DJ they can easily connect from their phone.

I did the bluetooth route for a while as well, it was a decent alternative.... use a good one though (like shown above), I bought cheap and got what I paid for.

I just spent three days on my boat with my wife and kids. Sailed Saturday and Sunday. I'm usually onboard mid-week to avoid the crowds. I think you may have me confused with another boat...
