I have been doing a radio program Monday afternoons on the local NPR affiliate station, KFSK Petersburg, Alaska. Since most of the volunteer DJs play classic rock or C&W, I settled on Island Music from my collection. Mostly Hawaiian but the last couple of weeks I have done music from the Atlantic side of the Americas.

I will be on the air today with more Island Music. From the Cuban big band sound of Desi Arnaz to UB40 and Stone Ranger's Reggae Cowboys with some steel drums thrown in for ear candy. Live stream beginning at around 12:35 AKST (4:35 EST, 1:35 PST, Bumbye, Hawaii) at KFSK | Community Radio following the Fish Report and preceding "What's for Dinner" with Mindy Anderson.

The podcast download link from last week's program will be available until this program is over. Then the new show will take it's place until next week at:

UPDATE 3/10/2015: The program is now available for download at the link above

There is no money in this for me. It is just a volunteer thing I do. If you would like to share your favorite Island Music artists, I would love to hear about them. (NOTE: I already have everything Jimmy Buffet ever recorded)

Ironically, what the visitors to the islands want to hear is not a lot of island/regge/calypso type music. Sure, they like hearing it, but mixed with their favorite tunes from back home. After 30 minutes of steel drums I've pretty much had it, and so have most audiences.

Cheers,

Gary

Remember, my broadcast audience is in SE Alaska. They love the tropical sounds once a week. Steel drums do get boring pretty quickly but I like them as a dash of spice with other instrumentation and vocals. Today will be the first time I have included any full steel drum instrumentals in the play list.

Give a listen to the Stone Ranger "Reggae Cowboys" selections toward the end of today's program. I really like it (No steel drums)

Some random stuff I like to listen to on the boat:
- Buena Vista Social Club (Cuban music listen here - Chan Chan and listen here - El cuarto de Tula)
- Afro Cuban AllStars (concert here, cool horns)
- Sunny Jim White, Michael McCloud and Scott Kirby because they remind me of nights in the Keys
- Buckwheat Zydeco - New Orleans not the islands but it feels good, gets you tapping your feet and reminds me of the Quarter
- UB40, Inner Circle, Ziggy Marley, Bob Marley
- Carnival Steel Drum Band - yeah I know but I like to listen to it on the boat
- Michael Beans (listen here, more good memories)

I would throw Entrain into the mix of "Cuban big band sound of Desi Arnaz to UB40 and Stone Ranger's Reggae Cowboys" They're an east coast band - originating on Martha's Vineyard.

Or a live version...

Even more impressive because this was "switched live, ... & never edited"

Hawaiian music offers so much variety I don't think you can go wrong there. Just dial up"Hawaiian" on Pandora and you'll hear everything from Gabby Pahinui to jawaiian and everything in between. Should give you lots of ideas.

I didn't want to post again until I was sure. The program broadcast yesterday, Monday, 3/9/2015 will be available for podcast/download until next Monday when the new show replaces it. LINKY

Next week is St Patrick's day so the "Island Music" will come from the North Atlantic.

Listen to the live stream from Petersburg, Alaska KFSK | Community Radio
