I'm getting new standing rigging for my Islander 30 Mark II, and will be pulling the mast for some other work as well. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with where/how the wiring makes its way down from the deck and if there is a recommended way/location to disconnect it/reconnect it.

Having never done this before I wanted to make sure that the idea of just cutting it and then putting crimp on connectors is as wrong as I think. It seems like there should be a method of making the wires dis-connectable if I ever need to pull the mast again.

I'm not sure how the Islander wiring is done.

One of the better solutions is to lead the wires through the deck in a waterproof manner, a swan neck being a good one, and to a terminal block inside. Easy to disconnect for a mast removal and all terminations are inside.

This assumes a deck stepped mast.

Thanks - I'm going to go track down the wiring tomorrow and I like your idea of a wiring block. I'll see if there's room for one.

If there isn't room you can always place it on the overhead - possibly in the head if the layout allows - and cover it with teak trim.

Hi I also have an islander 30 mkII and my wiring is led up through a hole in the mast step, when you lift the mast a few inches you are able to disconnect the wires. (mine are connected with waterproof plugs wrapped in tape.) I hope this helps you out!

I am working a similar issue on my Islander 30. There is a 4 prong plug at the bottom of the mast and the a wiring block fore and to port (under headliner in the head). On mine there was a single ground and three hot wires - of which only one was live when I un stepped the mast and took it apart. Inside the mast is a conduit that I believe runs to the top - appears to be 1.25-1.5 inches diameter.

I'd be interested to know what you ended up doing on yours as a point of reference - what gauge wire you used and did you reuse or replace the plug connectors. I am planning on 3-4 circuits in the mast -
1) Steaming and anchor light (could be two sep runs)
2) Windex light
3) Spreader/Deck lights
4) forward serch/docking light
5) Spare

Sorry to revive an old thread, but was looking for some advice on wire gauge to use in this run, and saw your post.....

While I dont own an Islander our wires exit the mast inside the boat just under the headline through a hole. Some are at the masts base. It would be better if yours is set up similarlly that way to set up a junction box inside your boat rather than have something on the outside with plugs which can get in the way, have water intrude, and will weather in the sun. Most of the wires in our box are 14/ 12 gauge depending on instruments vs electrical and also a coax cable connection for the VHF. We made a small rteak box to enclose it and it looks like a smaller version of our alpenglow fixtures.
