So I came into a mast, and I am not a sailor, it's just been sitting on our property for god only knows how long. It is some kind of fiber weave, 24" tall and 6" in diameter. I do not see where any boom would attach (boom is the correct term for the horizontal part that holds a sail,no?), but it does have a rope (the rope is in bad shape), that goes through the thing top to bottom and, and it has a plastic looking top with a concave hole into which the rope goes into at what I assume is the top.

I wonder what kind of boat could use such a mast and what it is worth? I have a friend who builds boats and he knows a little. He thought it was likely some kind of racing mast, and figured it was at least worth $500, but he only builds yachts and he is certainly no authority on the matter. Any help I can get would be appreciated and I can get some pictures tomorrow if that will help. Thanks in advance!

Photos would help a lot. I'm guessing it is 24' not 2' long and 6" in diameter...

Could be whats left of a carbon spinaker pole, or the boom, and not a mast. Again, with out pics, who knows what it is.

With only one post, not sure if pics or links will work to post a pic, with out doing the post 1, then post 2 or some such thing.......

Put a light on top and stick it in the ground, Looks like a light pole. They make them out of a spiral weave and are black, looks like one.
