So, this summer I am more than likely going to take my Holder 14 on a lake near my parents. My boat, does not have any battery. Do they make legal lights that dont have to be wired to the boat? I would obviously need the red, green, and white light.

Thanks!

Yes they make portable Navigation lights Attwood Portable Navigation Light Kit - Walmart.com
However for your 14 ft holder if you don't place an outboard larger than ten horsepower( and I doubt you will) you just need a white flashlight to shine in the direction of other vessels and on your sail to let them know you are there jaw the USCG nav regulations http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...wzY6zqkPyQxTwdp6OZReXbg&bvm=bv.88528373,d.cGU for vessels under 7 meters in length
This may be true, but the LEOs on our lake would pull you over in a heartbeat. I'd go the battery operated route for safety and convenience.

True I got a ticket for no anchor light on my 7 meter boat one time in a USCG designated special anchorage took a half day wasted in court to get the ticket dropped so yep get lights cheaper than taking half day off from work

...For now I gotta focus on learning how to sail in the day time! Sometime in the summer I will purchase these. :p
If you are just learning to sail, I wouldn't expect to be sailing at night this summer. Maybe you're wisely preparing for an accidental return to the marina at night. Otherwise, stick to daytime. While I feel capable to do so, I rarely sail at night, unless offshore. Can't see lobster pots.

Where do you sail?

Do yourself a favour and get an LED head torch with both white and red lights. If your're legal to flash a light for navigation lights this works well and the red light can be used to see stuff on the boat without affecting your night vision.

NIGHT SAILING ROCKS! Some of my best summer sails have been overnight races; cooler, better wind, awesome skies.

Even better when you're sailing home solo after a long day of racing and can just enjoy.:)

But we do agree on one thing Minne; it's best offshore!

I will be sailing in the Long Island sound. The waters are very calm where I will be. I also plan on driving it up to my parents in VT and sailing on Lake Champlain.

Just FYI, if you want to run a battery on the Holder, it's not that hard to mount in the forward cubby. You can run wires aft to a trolling motor for backup propulsion and could wire in lights if you were planning on being out at night a lot. Even though I have the battery and motor, though, if I ever get around to night sailing I'll just go with the cheap self contained lights because easy.

If you can't sail from that lake all the way down to the oceans?

The USCG probably has no jurisdiction there, they only deal with "navigable waterways". Your state (unmentioned) and municipality might have regulations about lighting.

A simple white light on a pole might suffice, or you might need the battery-operated colored sets. All depends on what rules apply there.

Of course if there are lots of drunks on powerboats and it is a big lake...you'll need all the help you can find, anyway.

Well as far as I know the USCG has jurisdiction on all bodies of water that you can run a boat on. Here's an example I found USCG: Station Lake Tahoe and I can't navigate a boat from there to the open ocean fwiw

Would guess:
Federal Dam Project
Federal Body of Water
Federal Recreational Area
==================total 'em up:
Federal Juroisdiction

Or perhaps the jurisdiction existed because BEFORE the dam, which can be portaged around, the waterway was navigable to the sea.

Either way, projects like Lake Tahoe are vastly different from ordinary landlocked lakes. Feel free to call the USCG if you can't find the online references to this. I know I've seen them in at least two different "state boating reguations" guide books.

Here's an excerpt I found on USCG authority and I quote " the Coast Guard may go aboard any United States vessel at any time, anywhere to conduct a documentation and safety inspection. A search of a U.S. vessel beyond this type of inspection is subject to limitations under the United States Constitution. If a search extends beyond this narrowly defined scope, a court may be asked to evaluate the legality of the search by balancing the individual's right to privacy in the specific circumstances of the " end quote and here's the link to the entire text Jurisdiction - Chapter 3 fwiw
