the first step to a paid position in my opinion is go to ft lauderdale and get stcw certified. it's not real cheap about 900 bucks but most insurance companies want you to have it.

jlynn i just sailed through smyrna on monday it was blowing 35 kts and the break still didnt look that nice. must be why you dont care for it. i'm at hilton head now but gotta fly home for work. sigh.... guess the real world can only wait so long. p.s. try spending time partying at yacht crew houses ,often called hostels but on the coast they're crew houses,they are a great way to meet contacts for crew positions and even day work on boats
