Yup, I've tried the search here but it really doesn't work that well it seems. I am looking to get some new mainsheet and jib lines but not sure what type. I would love to have blue for the mainsheet and red for the jib sheet. Not only will it help me a tad as a beginner but it will help my wife and daughters who want to learn to sail AFTER I learn. So what type?

I would prefer to have at least 3/8" and something not so hard on the hands. I heard several people like the Regatta Braid but I can't seem to find them in different colors.

What type of boat do you have? 3/8" may or may not be right for your boat? Is 3/8" what you have now? There are plenty of options for colored lines. Defender is a good resource right now as they are having their annual warehouse sale. Do you know what lengths you need for your mainsheet and jibsheets?

I have a Precision 165 not sure how long I need for either but was just planning on measuring and adding 10 feet to each jib line side and 10 feet to the mainsheet. At under a dollar a foot I would rather over compensate and cut later.

I just ordered Samson Control DPX line for my mainsheet line from defender tonight. I have held New England salsa line before which is a 12 strand single braid line and it is amazing to hold and is so soft it never kinks or loads up in the blocks. The DPX is similar to Yale PhD line but with a much higher load rating. Defender only has 1/2" DPX, which is what I needed for my 47' boat, but I'm sure you can get it from Annapolis Performance Sailing or Layline or some where else.

As for colors, they are white with red, blue, or green flecks.. And I think an all white one.

12 strand is easy to splice as well.. But if you can find the Salsa line, that would work on your size boat if you don't mind a little more stretch. Probably a little cheaper than the DPX.

I also got Samson MLX 3/8" for my boom vang, well see how that feels. You could try that for sheets, it's a mid ground line price and specs wise. And have solid colors with some white snow looking spots on it.. Hard to explain, you'll see it when you look at it.

Um I wouldn't go bigger than 5/16 on the p165... Also for sheets, and control lines, basic sta-set X will work. Ebay is probably your cheapest source.

I suggest you measure the existing lines and replace them with lines the same length. It might seem unimportant to have extra line lying around, but that extra line is constantly under foot, and it has to be untangled frequently. That extra, unneeded line will become a nuisance.

The PO left me the jib lines but I truly think they are too short with what looks like would only be about 3 feet in the cockpit on a close haul. When I get to the point where I feel comfortable going wing on wing on a downwind, I highly doubt there will be enough left in the cockpit for control. If I buy too long then I just cut to the proper length.

Regarding the mainsheet, same thing. If I have to let out the main sheet quite a ways to depower in a hurry or even not in a hurry, I don't think there is enough line for this.

Looks like both lines are 5/16".

5/16" would be as small as I'd go too, they'll be way overkill for strength, but at that size they'll be plenty light enough, and easy to handle.

I had 3/8" on my Capri 14.2 for genoa sheets, and it was crazy heavy. Catalina likes to buy 1 sized line for every size boat they make. I had the same exact sheets on my Capri 22, and 25 as my 14.2. Given how expensive line is, I could see why they'd take that bent.

This page contains all the specs for running rigging from the manufacturer: http://www.precisionboatworks.com/parts/parts.php?boat=P-165.

Jibsheet is spec'd at 1/4" x 26' and mainsheet is 5/16" x 52'. You may want to increase the jibsheet to 5/16 to make it a bit more comfortable, but 3/8 will be a bit much. As far as length -- too long isn't quite as bad a too short, but underfoot it can be a PITA. Adding 10' is approaching doubling what the manufacturer indicates. Adding 5' gives you an additional 20% -- that should be plenty.

Trophy braid should be fine for your use and Defender's sale is a bargain.

Enjoy.

You might try Running Rigging Calculator
THIS is what they recommend for the P16, no info was listed for the 16.5. They are using 1/4" line, which is probably ample for your boat.

The calculator for boats they have listed does come in pretty close for boats I know of.

I also have color coded my lines. Blue for mainsail, red for jibs, green for spinnakers.

PERFECT thanks CLucas and everybody else. I just measured the jib sheets and there is 12' each side so 24' so 2 feet short (I was close at guessing 3 feet short). I will go to RED 5/16" and 31' for jib.

Just measured the main and it was 30' at 5/16". If specs show 52' (which seems very high for me even as a noob) then 30' is way off. Main I will go BLUE 5/16" at 52' (I don't think I will increase main....block is for 5/16").

I see Defender has the 5/16" Samson Trophy braid at .58/foot where APS is .74/foot. Another order to Defender--:)

I'm happy with the Trophy Braid for my sheets and XLS Yacht Braid for halyards. 5/16" sounds small for sheets that will spend a lot of time in your hand but I don't know your boat.
When considering line size be sure to look at your blocks, cleats etc.
I wanted line I could easily grab for my main sheet and thought I measured 1/2" on the old sheet. When the line came it wouldn't run through the blocks. I learned from that and bought 2' lengths of different sizes and tested them in my hand and the boat.
APSLTD has great service and gives good advice. Defender has good prices. Between them you should be able to find what you want.
Like you I did solid blue for main sheet, then blue speck for main halyard. Solid red for jib sheets and red speck for jib halyard.
