One of my next projects is to install an hour meter, tapping off the ignition switch in the cockpit for the hot and grounding on the engine. Looking at the marine wiring color code the closest I can come to figuring out which color wire to use is PURPLE.
Ignition and Instruments: Ignition switch to coil and electrical instruments.

Any naysayers?

Maybe orange?

When I put my hour meter in I used the oil pressure switch. Granted I have that for my electric fuel pump on my A4, but this way it will only one running when the engine is actually running, not when the ignition switch is on. Probably inconsequential, but that was my rationale.

You can really use any color you like, since it's behind the panel! :) Red or purple will work just fine.

You don't have to run a separate ground for the meter all the way to engine, you should have a ground wire at the panel anyway.

Dave, the Hobb's meter is an instrument. Therefore, Dark Blue according to that chart. Or ignition gray. Probably should be a blue-and-gray striped wire to fill the spirit both ways. (G)
