Looking for some advice on replacing the steering support. Something I noticed when I bought the boat is the inspection cover for the emergency tiller was leaking and caused the wood to rot. The area of concern is to the right of the red line as the angle of the wood piece kept the water from traveling forward. I understand I could cut the entire original part out and replace it but looking for other ideas obviously less mess or work would be nice but also maybe a better way than the factory. From the way I see it is rudder bearing support isn't an ideal design and seems alittle weak. If run aground this takes a lot the load keeping the rudder post from bending. The boat is a 1982 Mirage 33.
