Mystic CT to Hampton VA
355 Miles
60 hour total.
Motored about 25 hours.

Boat is Cardinal 46
We were doing 9.5 knots in 15 to 20 knots on a beam reach for the first 20+ hours until it turned to crap.

You can see where were were being headed until we hit the edge of the gulf stream as our boat speed fell off to about 3 knots.
We then motored straight back to shore to get out of the current then tried to sail again and gave up then motor sailed into the wind.

From Fri am to Sat 11 Am we made about 180 miles with the wind on our beam at 20 to 25 knots but then it turned more south and picked up to 30 knots. Not comfortable.

I've always liked the look of the Cardinal 46 from afar, but have never been aboard one. What were your impressions overall?

Gulf Stream, eh?

I've always liked the look of the Cardinal 46 from afar, but have never been aboard one. What were your impressions overall?

The boat is amazing.

Very solid feel. As I mentioned it seem to sail very well.

Of course I have not had the opportunity to sail extensively any other boats of a similer quality.

I've sailed the Farr 39 but that is a totally race machine.

I've sailed a few Bene's but again nothing comparable.

What would you consider would be in the same class?

This particular boat was the original owner an was maintained to the highest level I've ever seen.
We had to remove our boat shoes every time we went below.
The entire interior was temporary slip-covered and carpeted for the delivery.
It is varnished at least once a year.

The teak deck is 20 plus years old and looks brand new.

He put in a new engine a couple weeks ago himself.

I believe he has refitted every system at least once some several time.

A year ago he had all the gellcoat removed, a layer of glass added, and epoxied, re-faired, all gripped for about 50k.

It is a joy to sail compared the the project boats I usually sail as everything works and works right.

Well almost everything as even on this trip we had a few events.

Yes it looks like the stream is further out but the boat did slow down dramatically so we figured we were running into something local. Maybe not every little eddy shows on the big chart.
What do you think it was?

From the charted route you posted, you were well inside the Gulf Stream, even inside most of the eddies. Looks like you were about 30 miles offshore at best, thus at least another 30 miles to the stream, which is just outside the canyon edges this time of year.

The boat looks great, and I'm glad you have a safe trip to Hampton.

I just ran the ruler and you are exactly right. About 30 miles either to the shore or the canyon.

Still can't figure why we slowed down so much.
I had just come on shift and wasn't paying that much attention. It might have been as simple as that we were pinching too much. I did see the 4.x knots though.

Sometimes, there are some weird tidal currents that emit off the tops of those offshore lumps and humps, such as the Jack Spot, which is about 25 miles southeast of Ocean City, MD, and the Parking Lot, which is due east of Chincoteague, VA. It's a weird phenomena that I just never could find a good explanation for. I fished those areas a lot for decades, and those crazy currents were why the bluefin tuna stacked up there.
