Hello all . my new/old boat was refinished with Awlgrip about
4 years ago. The seller/will be former owner . . is artistic so
he painted on his boat name and hailing port. My home
port is different and I am renaming ..

How do I deal with the painted on name/port? I don't want to
ruin the awlgrip painted finish .. but how can I get the old
painted on name off?

Thank for the help

i would start off with the most gentle solvent and method, a wet t shirt. i that does not work try, alky and the tshirt, then maybe lighter fluid. if you step up thru the scale of stuff you might find one that will take off the lettering but not hurt the under lieing awlgrip. other wise good luck

Since no one has come forth with the magic elixir, I suggest that you call the Interlux yachtpaint.com - the official site of International and Interlux paints hotline 800-468-7589, they are very helpful and will be able to advise you appropriately.

Unfortunately I have seen many a painted hull where the old name has been blocked out by a fresh coat of paint with the new name on top of it...this patch is usually quite observable from a distance. If the name is on the stern, you are all set, you just need to have the stern taped and painted...yikes.

Awl is a catalyzed paint and quite hard where as the name is most likely painted on with enamel. Try some lacquer thinner to see if it will wash off in a small spot.

Got a call from the Awlgrip rep tonight.. He told me that the painted
on name/hailing port is a big problem. He said that no matter what I
did the end result was bad. If I try paint remover? Will get to Awlgrip.
Thinner? Will get to Awlgrip.. The only answer he had was .. re-awlgrip
the stern, then put on new name/hailing port.

Another idea that someone sent me? Paint over the name, port, and then paint the new name/port on the new paint... but don't use awlgrip..

One other problem.. the boat is in the water.. Ooops..

Good lesson for all .. use the vinyl lettering .. it will come off
easy with the proper method.
