After 4 months on the hard we are finally leaving Oak Harbor Marina with our 36 Lancer along Rock Creek / Potapso on Tuesday. Navigating to Parkside Marina, Middle River. I see that we can save a lot of time cutting through Pleasure Island. I am looking for help on this cut through. Is this like Kent Narrows or easier? Is it well marked? Thanks, Dave

Don't do it. We keep our boat at MYC on Rock Creek and don't try that shortcut drawing 4.5 on. A 35 C&C. You would save 1.5 miles at best and the risk of a hard grounding in a shallow area nit worth it plus a multitude of crab pots. The passage is for power boaters. Good luck.

I disagree with chef2sail on this one. Been through there several times, although not this year, and have never had a problem. Currents are not strong.

We draw about 4'2" board up and have never bumped. You don't say what your draft is? Go through at high tide if you draw more than 5'.

It is well marked.

From www.activecaptain.com...

"Hart-Miller Island Cut is the local name. Major project underway by MdDNR to shore-up the beaches of Pleasure Island to prevent/slow shoaling in 'the cut.' New dredging is scheduled for early 2011.2 July 2013, a boat drawing 3 feet 10 inches went thru the cut north to south within 1 hour of low tide. Reported no problem s. Lowest depth found was 8 1/2 feet, but most of the cut was above 9 feet."

You can avoid crab pot hell but staying west closer to shore. Seems this year there are not as many crab pots in general on the bay, that said I had some awesome crabs last night at a nearby club :)

You should be good since it was dredged several years ago to 8'. We have friends who use it when going from Middle River to Baltimore and they never report a problem.

I've taken my boat through drawing 6'. Note that like most of the Chesapeake wind direction and duration makes more difference in water depth than state of tide. If the wind has been blowing from the North for a few days I probably wouldn't try it. Two days of South winds and I would go for it.

You were right!! Last Tuesday we cut through the "Harte-Miller Cut" Thru and had no problems what so ever. We draft 4'6". Hit the channel on the downside of 2nd peak tide and carried through 9 feet. like you said, very well marked. All worked out well and thanks. Saved us time.

Glad it worked out. I've been going through there for many years, mostly when I kept my former boat in Middle River.

If you're not familiar with Active Captain, get their App for your device, its good for questions like this...as you note I quoted it above.

Enjoy the rest of your season

Cheers
