I just bought a '83 Irwin Citation 31 ft sailboat and I found on it this part in a storage bin. It may not be an original part. It has cable with a plug-in, like a depth meter or similar.

It is a drive unit for an autopilot. It goes with a large sprocket that is attached to the wheel, a belt to join them and a control unit. Might be one of those things that just seemed to be too (potentially) useful to throw out.
