New cutlass bearing - indexing mark?

942 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  mwrohde
My new cutlass bearing has arrived, but before I installed it I wanted to ask you all about a curious mark on it. It looks like an indexing mark, or alignment mark, but I don't know what it should be aligned with. Any help will be appreciated.

Probably a mark from when it was cut. such things have no top or bottom. the only think I can think of, it may have a mark for where the set screw dimple would go but that would seem doubtful
I emailed the manufacturer and got a response right away. They say

The paint dot on the bearing is not an indexing mark. Our bearings go through a series of quality inspections and a particular color identifies the machinist who does the final machining operation.
